Hi All
We are doing the Hay River experience in Aug/Sept and I'm in a Petrol 100 series with approx 1000kms between drinks, 270 litres petrol plus 72 litres gas (at this stage it will be from Innaminka thru to Jervois).
Now I know I get more mileage out of premium unleaded but I guess you can't get premium out the back of beyond so I had a thought that if you increased the octane to that of premium you would get better mileage. Is this pie in the sky or feasable.

Mal,
The other variable you may need to consider is city style unleaded is not available in remote communities.
You'll find an animal called Opal unleaded, an un-sniffable variant.

The real question for you is not only the ability to increase Octane of unleaded but the ability to increase Octane of Opal.

Or how is the range of an LC100 V8 influenced by Opal.

Hope I've helped, my LC is diesel which is oddly enough influenced by up to 1.5 litres per 100k by just the brand of diesel!

Geoff,
Interesting.I kept a log for 8 years on the 94 Rodeo. Seemed that consumption matched conditions. Av was 8.7L/100km. over 280000 km.Wonderfully reliable Old Girl. Worst I got was 14L/100, towing a high-drag , dual axle trailer from Brisbane to Cairns, lead foot and Northerlies kicking in.
Present unit ,2001 built 3L rodeo, averages 10.2, but fluctuates widely.
(And thanks in advance for wind/speed/towing advice folks. My beard is no longer black, and hence I have the time to listen......)

Will add Fuel Source to consumption figures in future, and see what correlates.
Good point, and second time I've seen a similar reference in quick time.
Much appreciated for what may yet be another con-job.

But to be fair, vehicle comparisons:
1;- 1994 Rodeo dual cab,fg canopy, 125L fuel. 2.8 diesel. 8.7L/100km.
2;- 2002 Rodeo space cab, bull bar, roof-mounted solar panel 10.7L/100km.
We watch and we learn, (maybe).
Jeff.

Geoff

I think you will find that Opal is only available in Alice Springs and west of it at the moment and might not be in Birdsville

Cheers

Hi Willem,
I'll defer to your experience on the Opal, my information was secondhand on its distribution.

Thanks for the as usual valuable information,

Geoff.

Basically pie in the sky Mal

Anyway you can get premium at Birdsville. We used less fuel on that trip than imagined which included some side trips , and went on to Alice without re-fueling at Jervious. Birdsville - Alice 1133km using 228lt in a 4800 patrol which is rated at a higher consumption than your cruiser (no trailers ).

What I would do is ring ahead to Birdsville and check type/make of fuel they use and fill up with same type well before then.

You'll gain more advantage by allowing your ECU to trim itself to the fuel beforehand. (give ECU minimum 500km).
