I have a Mitsi Challenger and have recently purchased a Jayco camper weighing 1800kg. I have been told by various people that I should tow camper in 3rd gear instead of D. When I tow through hills I drop to 3rd but on open road I want to know if ok to tow in D. Can someone please advise. Cheers

G'day
I was advised the same thing a couple of years ago. " Tow in 3rd or you'll wear out the bands in the tranny". Had already towed the van 1100 klms in Drive with no probs. Easy going, bitumen road. Needed a new
water pump so went to local garage in small town and got fitted.
Young mechanic "We see lots of worn out trannys cos they tow in D." OK I thinks, Do the right thing, take the experts advice. Set off next day, in 3rd, got 100 ks down the road, cooked the gearbox. Trannie hot as hades, started jumping gears etc. Have since sold that one and bought a manual, but if I ever have another auto I will not hesitate to tow in the gear most comfortable for the vehicle. i.e. Drive. Moral of this story....Trust your judgement, don't listen to
young mechanics.

Hi Seaslug
Also have a Challenger (our third in fact) have towed our camper many thousands of Ks, quick trips
Brisbane to
Adelaide and back many times leisurely trips to
Brisbane to Vic.
Brisbane to
Birdsville and on to the Gulf and then back down the coast all using "D". Only time using a lower gear has been down steep hills and and in sandy and or rough conditions, never had a problem. Touch wood.
Regards
Rocky

Thanx 4 help. Very happy with Mitsi. Have been to
Flinders Ranges few times now. No probs with off-road or on-road. Took it on Skytreck - handled with ease. Good on fuel.
Cheers

Regardless of the vehicle I have always used 'D' and changed down or eased off accelerator pedal if trannie started hunting back and
forth for gears. I think a lot of damage is done by drivers trying to keep up with traffic no matter what. So ease off and enjoy the drive (no pun intended).
Check your manual.

Auto Transmissions are pretty smart. They always seem to pick the gear they want to be in. D should be fine.
