Hi Sgt paul.
I think if you would be going for a let's say 2004/2005 model GU 3ltr. diesel you will be ok. I own a 2004 model 3ltr. and am extremely happy with it. I keep a stringent service history and look after the car really
well. So far I had no problems what so ever. The problems you are hearing about are the early model 3ltr. diesels and there only one series of them. Even my local dealer, where I have my car serviced admits to that.
Hopefully this will help a little. All the best.

If you want an auto sarge, then you'll be looking at a 3.0L or the petrol version. The petrol goes like a scalded cat but is thirsty, particularly off road. The 3.0L has had it's problems, but the later ones seem to be OK. If you're keeping the GQ for serious off roading, the 3.0L may not be a problem, but IMO they are underpowered when driving slow, "under" the turbo. If that's a drama, then the manual 4.2TD may be your answer.
Have a good look around, there are some good ones out there!
Cheers
Brian

The manual ones might be a bit painfull "under the turbo" but the auto's are great.

I would be looking at a petrol one and get the LPG conversion done. With the government rebate it is very attractive.

Hey Sgt paul, are you really a sgt? I have a 02 Toy Prado diesel and it is the best fourby. They are going quite cheap. have a look under Prado in ebay they have about 40 for sale. If I had the money I would sell the diesel and get one on petrol/gas.

Sgt Paul
The 3.0 TD has a history of problems especially in the early models. The early model 3.0 TD would self destruct. The fuel pump is very susceptible to failure if the fuel is contaminated. The cost of replacing the fuel pump is about $5,500. It does however come with an auto gearbox as an option.
The 4.8 petrol is very powerful and thirsty. It does have the option of an auto gearbox. It could be the answer if you could find one with dual fuel.
I have the 4.2 TD. It is a very reliable motor and a good towing vehicle. It does not come with an auto gearbox. When I bought my GU I had the choice of the three motors and went for the 4.2 TD. I have never regretted the decision.

For less than your budget, i will soon be marketing (and will advertise on the Trader when i can bring myself to bear the thought of parting with it) a 2002 3 ltr td auto Patrol. We've had absolutely no problems, and being 2002 is the series after the much maligned version. As you know, the Patrol is a great vehicle.
