I am looking to replace my 89 GQ Patrol with a good towing vehicle. After test driving many cars and utes the GU wagon suits us best, although I was disappointed with the power compared to my tired old LPG GQ, (which is still fairly sprightly around town, different story with the horse float on).
I have read lots of forums and talked to many people, the feeling I get is I should get a 2005 TDi, or a 2004 TD and add an intercooler, and the best value for money mods would be a larger exhaust, increased boost on the original turbo, and adjust the fuel pump for higher delivery and tune the timing.

Has anybody done these modifications ? How much improvement ?

Does anyone have any data comparing a 3" to a 2 1/2" exhaust ?

Maybe you need one of these ----

Put your GQ underneath it, get the reg, then whack in a new engine, keep the change....

Crikey, makes my little Roey look like a toy. But they probably have to tow a fuel trailer around behind them to go any distance. :)

Hi B-Rat,

I would recommend the 4.2l over the 3.0l anyday- especially for towing.
I have an 03 Patrol ute, 4.2l intercooled and has a 3" exhaust fitted and slightly higher boost (12psi) and it made 98Kw at the wheels- with 35inch tyres.
Makes alot of torque and good pulling power, even with the big tyres.
cheers

My experience is the 3.0L actually tows a lot better than the 4.2L

At one stage I had a 3.0 litre 2003 wagon and a 4.2 tdi ute. Both towed ok but after having the turbo upgrade and bigger exhaust fitted to the 4.2 it was so much better to tow with. Less gear changes and much easier to start off on a slope etc.. with a 2000kg caravan on the back. Having said that the 4.2 uses more fuel than the 3.0 litre used. I now only have the ute as it suited want I wanted to do, better towing and can fit all swmbo's gear in.
