Hi All,
Sitting here in
Innamincka, freezing the proverbials off. It is overcast with a strong cold southerly but all is good. No rain yet! The trip so far has taken us up the Strezelecki Track from
Lyndhurst having come across from
Melbourne. It took us four days to get here and so far we have been here three days. Nice and peacefull and relaxing and very quiet. Head out to Coongie for a few days on Friday so looking forward to that. The Old Strez track still had a lot of
water on it, but there were diversion tracks in place so a great drive. I am expecting the Coongie Lakes track to be the same, so good fun. The main Strez was an easy run, with lots of grading going on. Cold and windy at
Montecollina Bore, too cold even for a swim, but nice place to
camp if no wind. Started to rain when we left there, but didnt last long as we headed north.
Cheers and will post more further on.

Sounds like you are enjoying the trip so far, Coongie Lakes track is usually a bit rougher. When you get to Coongie Lakes there is a track that goes out to the East/Sth East through some sand
hill areas. There are some nice protected
camping area's out that way, especially right at the end of this track...
If you need a guide out there, send me a msg ;-)

Freezing cold in
Birdsville - 12 degrees, wind chill factor - ?? No rain and no chance of any, too far south I believe from looking at the map. The Simpson is challenging, can't believe it is so rough (dished) so early in the season. Sand blows are still very high - we came up the K1 (saw a ute plowed into the first dune at the corner of K1 and Rig - huge blow there, impassable) - still some ponded
water on the lower K1 - not much
water in the
Warburton Crossing and plenty of rock in the bottom anyway. Dead camel on the K1. The QAA was very rough - tyre pressures to blame for that.(How do I know - had the misfortune to follow some very high ones) Wind blowing S-Se. Not too much rubbish i am pleased to report. COming west to east the dunes at the top dogleg left, then sharp right. Big Red was easy (in the new Toyota Ute V8) - the Chicken Run was very difficult at the top and had not been used recently (except by our friends in their Nissans). The Plateau on the top of Big Red has completely filled in with sand again - the winds have been big and strong during the dry drought-ridden summer.
So far the Ute has been good - Ian is a bit disappointed with performance and the fuel consumption hasn't been as good as expected. My only whinge pertains to being rather uncomfortable in the passenger area - not the
seat, it's good. Took a while to work out that the transfer case is very wide and when sitting square on in the
seat (hanging on to the grab bar) your right leg has to be slightly left, or up on the transfer case. Hmmmmm.
Hope you have a good time Glenn and James - we'll be tripping when you get here so will miss you this time.

we (3 cars and 5 bikes) are off to Mt Dare -
Birdsville in a week and a half. Sounds like it's going to be a challenge.
We were leaving our route until the last minute. Whats your recommendation for the best way (challenging but reasonable considering 3 cars are carrying the weight for 11 guys).
Cheers,

Ruth, thats a better situation than my old series 2 Landrover. If a lady sat in the middle, she had to straddle the transfer 4wd selector. I never had female passengers that I wasn't on friendly terms with, didn't dare let them into the cabin :))

Gossy, really can't make any recommendations - other than, for gosh sake please make sure the tyre pressures in the cars are low - you will understand what I mean when you see the dishing up and down the dunes. You will have a great time - the bikes will go wherever - I noticed most bikes were off the side of the track because it was not so rough. Have a good time.
Footloose - how you doing? Know what you mean about the old Landy - Dad had one and it had a long gear shift - he liked to pick his middle
seat passengers too!

Brian Dear - when you watch ABC TV News tonight (Thursday) you will see that
Birdsville had a min temp today of 0.5 of 1 degree - which I think is the lowest in the State today! Reached a top of dunno - I was too busy fishing in the sun, out of the wind. Nice day today but freezing outside now cleaning the fish! This is the first day without wind for 4 weeks- only a breeze today. Still, better here than dead, eh?

Footsie Dear, we'll be tripping and will possibly miss you - that's good luck for you, yes? Ha ha. Thought you would be here this year. By the way, went to the Pub last night for a drink on the way home from a walk around town - $5/stubbie (thank goodness I drink Scotch - ha ha).

Glenn,
Thanks for the info on the track. I am heading up there on the 29th June for three weeks of fun. I usually get there in late July when it is nice and warm during the day. Are you doing any fishing, and if so, how are they biting? Is the causeway flowing?
Have a good time,
Bob

Hope you guys have a great trip. I am sure James' school marks will be even higher with your teachings. Love
Innamincka and the
waterhole, beautiful and serene after the harshness of the gibber plains.
Agree with the
camping spot round
Coongie Lake to the East. Nice peaceful spot.
