After reading all the posted threads and now leaning towards a Garmin instead of a Magellan, can anyone tell me if buying a Quest and spending around 850 dollars is worth it. No arguements please, just plain simple facts. Will Quest do the job when I go out into the scrub.

Hi Bauer
where did u purchase the Quest from? I have been watching the gps posts as i am tossing up which way to go as
well, the 276c has a bigger screen and does the same things as the Quest but is a lot dearer and not sure if the larger unit is worth it? It is probably a lot easier read if driving by your self.
Is the mapping u buy from Garmin worth the $(for the off road tracks particularly) or do u just down load from web sites for free as it seems every one else does; are these not as accurate as the Garmin maps?.

At $750 it's even better, yes it is a good product, it also comes with the Mapsource City Navigator V7 for general city and country maps
If you want better outback / remote topo maps you can download for free and install Shonkymaps.

Hi Fuji
I bought a Quest for my upcoming trip to the Kimberleys starting in July, using the MapSource software that is supplied, I created all the
routes & waypoints that I needed for the trip on the pc and downloaded them to the Quest. I even did a small route from home to work (45 klms) just to see how good it was, the voice directions & the plug-in speaker worked perfect.
To find out how accurate the Quest was I decided to find a Geocache which was hidden close to home, when the Quest indicated that I was at the coordinates given for the geocache, I found I was only about four feet away, I reckon that is fairly accurate.
I bought
mine online through Johnny Applseed and paid for express delivery and it arrived the next day.
I couldn't be happier with the Quest.
Regards,
John

Gday John & Doug
I am in the same boat and will always recommend Garmin. I've had my GPS 76 for a long time now (bought it before the 76 map came out - would prefer one with maps and memory)
I have finally got around to getting adapter plugs etc to use it with the laptop, and it has definetley worthwhile. I've got file conversion software now so I can make tracks on Google earth, convert them to most common files, then use them either on Mapsource (with shonkymaps) on the laptop or put them strait onto the GPS for use without maps. I have also come across some software for using google earth as the mooving map, but haven't worked out how to use it yet. Very handy!
Cheers Andrew

A Quest isn't one I would consider for out in the bush as its more Orientated to use of pre-loaded maps.
276c and 60c series garmins are more along the line I choose , because basically while many main
routes are included in mapping there are lots of errors and out of place tracks such that in bush situations I find internal mapping relatively useless.
Main thing I do for this type of use is load in tracks I have previously recorded or from say this website, and essentially use these as a guide.
The 2 units I mentioned allow about 15 such tracks to be easily pre-loaded, in high definition, and followed without confusion of other data.
Situation is quite different for fixed roads and here the now common Navigators are useful - there is a case for both types of function.

Absolutly no problems, will guide you from
Perth to
the tip of
Cape York ,or to a street in
Birdsville, will record 4100klm of the journey, and you can make your own
routes, and you will get a CD of the Mapping Software to use on you PC and Laptop if you have one, you could also add T4A into it also,

Have had my quest now for nearly 2 years and it is fantastic. Voice guidance is great for around the city and towns and tracks are easily downloaded using ozi. I reckon its one of the best things I have ever bought. Got
mine from Johnny appleseed in
Brisbane, they also run courses to get the most out it, (no connection to them, just a happy customer). If I had to find a negative, it would only be screen size, but you can't have everything. Handy to stick in your pocket when bushwalking.

Seeing that I am mentally challenged in GPS, I will have to drive to
St Kilda Rd and pop into Johnny Appleseed. Why can't they just load a desert tracks map or similar onto the damn unit and make life so much simpler. I don't have the patience to be buying and loading maps onto a laptop (if the missus lets me use hers) and then downloading onto the unit. Thank you for taking the time out to reply. Wave when you see me pointing the laser at you to clock your speed.

Doug that Quest page of yours is outstanding. As you know I have the 660. It does everything I need at the moment and my head hurts just contemplating learning how to use another device.
So much technology, so little time.
