Heading up to Broken Hill, Tibooburra, across to Strezlecki, up to Innaminka, on to Birdsville via Cordillo, down to Flinders Ranges, Echo Camp and finally Warraweena to meet some of you guys.
Friend I'm travelling with says we need to buy, in advance, a Desert Parks Pass and a Multi Parks Pass, total around $200.
What's the go? Can you just pay per night when you get to places if there is a charge or do you have to pre purchase? Are there places to camp where it is free? Seems rather expensive to me. I know I will have to pay for Echo Camp and Waraweena.
What do others do?
Thanks, in advance.

you don't need one for the first half up to the flinders. i don't know the flinders very well so i'm not sure. but you don't need $200 worth. when i stayed at wilpena i think i just paid per night.

Wilpena - you do need NP park pass as well as paying per night. You don't need a park pass if just driving through the parks of the northern Flinders, only if you venture into them or stay. I can't recall how much, but it wasn't expensive; this was April last year.

Motherhen. What's the difference between "driving through" and "venturing in"?

Twinkles - my terminology. If you visit the park, you have to pay a fee. If the road goes through the park, but you are just travelling through to a destination, you don't. I can dig up the brochures where i got the information, but not for a few days or so.

Wow..Does that mean if you pay $112 a year your are able to visit and camp in any South Australian National Parks?
How Generous your Government are....They deserve a pay rise! Hang on they just gave themselves one, didnt they? What the heck, give them another one! LOL

Hairy

Everything today is User Pay

Yes, I know in the Territory they have 'dishonesty boxes'...lol. But you are supposed to pay

I thought it was the Federal Gov who gave themselves a pay rise? Maybe the locals did so too. Hope I get one as well.....lol

We did the run a year or so similar to what you are planning, but from Brisbane.

Innamincka - if you camp on the town common (50 acres or so, was $5.00/night in the honesty box), no desert park pass required. If you want to camp at one of the water holes or Coongie lakes, you need a pass. You need to check, but I think you can get one from the Innamincka trading post.

We came in to northern flinders the back way off the Strezlecki at Mt Hopeless and went through to Arkaroola. Camped there a few days. No pass required. I think it is a private reserve. The national park that borders it though does require passes for camping. They were available from the ranger station just near the Arkaroola entrance at Balcanoona. Normal office hours if I remember correctly.

We went south from there to Wilpena Pound.
Wipena pound we just rocked up and paid our fees. Private camp site in the national park, and green grass.

We didn't go any further south than Wilpena. We ran out of time, and the bitumen starts there (loose interest in bitumen roads), so turned around and came home to Brisy.

Worth going, need to go another time. Afraid can't make it for the meet.

Hi Twinkles

Check this out.

You do not need a Multi Parks Pass. I used to get one each year when I was travelling through multiple National Parks but theses days I am doing other trips.

I buy the desert parksPass each year as I invariably go somewhere it is required. renewal only costs $60 per year and you get up to date information with it.

Cheers
