Can anyone tell me if lockers (air or auto) might help protect or strengthen diffs? In particular, a Prado 120 T/D Manual with a supposed weak rear diff? Any info appreciated.

Thanks Phill

Fron another forum:

"The problem is that the spider gears are stronger than the ring and pinion. when the wheel starts to spin and then gets sudden traction. the force is transmitted through the spiders, sence there is more contact area in the spiders than the actual ring and pinion the gear snaps back and shears the teeth. if you were to install a locker and eleminate the spiders the diff would be alot stronger. these diffs were built with to much backlash also causing problems.

Also apparently the ARB carrier deflects less than the stock carrier and with a solid pinion spacer the ring and pinion will deflect less than with the stock setup, making it a lot stronger"

Having said that it still does not guarantee that the diff won't break....

However doesn't all ARB's marketing material attempt to guarantee you that you will snap your axles before breaking the diff? I don't know if they mean they *actually* guarantee it but I'm fairly sure that is their design principle. That the diff is not the weakest point in the system.

I haven't seen/heard a lot about other brand lockers... I see TJM have released theirs at some stage.

I think you will find that the ARB tune is the "Locker" is stronger than the OEM's stuff and the likelihood is that the axel will shear before the "Locker" breaks.

Means nothing when the teeth on the crown wheel shear off.

Just a word of caution there Ford Rodeo as fitting a locker to the front may bring out the weakest link which in the Ford\Rodeo case may cause you to end up with two vehicles as the front may now have the traction to pull your car in half due to the dodgy chassis repairs ?

Hi FR

A prado with ARB lockers engaged was recovered by Theo of Birdsville Auto from the WAA line about 6 weeks back. It was towing a camper trailer. The diff was broke, removed and unable to complete the journey in 2WD. Recovery was of the Prado by one vehicle and the camper by another.
Obviously lockers doesn't stop the diff from breaking.
FYI
