If you have a look in the road conditions on this site you will see that it is closed and is expected to be so for a while.

travelled it last year - august....yep open to public ....

terrain changes frequently from sand dunes - flats - dead old forrest like area's - gibber...and back to the sand dunes again....

its a good days drive from innamincka to birdsville - lunch at the walkers crossing memorial site....

good driving when we did it but conditions change like buggery......

I'm in Birdsville at the moment and can say Walkers Crossing is CLOSED at present and will be for some time - go to Plan B.

Glad I didn't record the route we took last year when we went through from Birdsville.
The line would have been going in all directions as we got ourselves lost around the Moomba end in a pretty good dust storm.
Fortunately we must have looked suspicious enough that a security bloke raced out with an "oi". Once he accepted we were not terrorists, he gave us directions in to Innamincka.

Yes it is open to the public, but at present due to extensive water damage and retention it is closed and expected to be for some time (like months). Apparently will need grading and it is not high on the agenda at the moment.
