Conditions look acceptable for a local drive up to Mt Margret saturday morning.
So we plan to leave Ringwood area about 8am (ch 15) to be at
Buxton Igloo service station (200m to north of
buxton on RHS) for usual capicinno with a view to heading up the
hill by about 9:30
Looks more like it will be play snow than anything else but after last year we aren't going to take a chance and miss a snow drive.
Probably finnish drive by midday near Thorton.

Lets hope its a long snow season, and there may be other chances

Well we were the only ones to show up from this group for the snow trip , and as
well we meet no-one on the entire drive, which was amazing.
Left on time , after breakfast at Igloo roadhouse and got to top of mountain before 10am however there was little snow there.
Drove 2km north to highest road point at approx 1250m and by now snow was all over the road but only 2-3 inches dep.
It was a seriously beautiful drive thru the area in brillant sunshine with snow dripping off the overhanging trees.
With the road to ourselves we had great time , espically as we had packed our plastic toboggan.
and spent some time playing and eating birthday cake and coffee's next to a
creek lined with snow and partly ice covered.
Amazed at how
well the Maxxis MT's I got early this year went , the relatively narrow size (255) saw them break thru the ice crust and stick like glue.
Tried slamming on the brakes etc which normally induces a slide but they just hung on.
It looks like we picked the best time and snow has already started to go , however its early in the season and lets hope for heavy falls to come.

Robin,
Good to see you got out in the snow.
We headed up past
Licola on the Tamboritha Rd, Sunday.
Hit the first snow at 857m (going by GPS) but was only patchy. On the way up we could see the top of each
hill covered in snow. (Could actually see a fair bit of snow cover from home earlier in the week).
Constant snow on the road at 1000m.
Got to
Tamboritha Saddle where the stockyards are and there was a lot of snow. A few vehicles parked with people around.
Decided to head further north to stop at Lost Plain. Almost got to Kelly's Lane/Thomastown and the snow certainly got deeper. The only vehicle past here was the SES Argo (Over-snow vehicle with tracks) the day before.
Used the diff-locks and a lot of Fwd-rev-fwd-rev-fwd etc to get the last 100m to Kellys lane where we stopped for lunch and to let the kids tabbogan.
Great day with brilliant sunshine and no wind - about 16-18 degrees or so.
Left a bit late - having too much fun - had to winch and shovel to complete the three point turn - and then headed back to
Tamboritha Saddle for a brew in the snow. The road was getting a bit icy at that stage and a bit of a slip required diff-locks to get back into the snow ruts. No real drama though.
Snow on the road where we were was about 40cm and was hard going. Aired down the tyres (not enough) to try and float along - will go lower next time just to see if it does work.
Had the chains onboard but decided not to fit them - I reckon they are the last resort!!!
All in all a great day in the snow - kids are still talking about this morning before going to school to tell their mates in the 2wd brigade what they miss out on! :-)
