As a lightweight temperary camping option id like to remove middle row of seats in my prado and throw in mattress (double of course- it gets cold!) Is there an easy way to remove and reinstall seats? Any other comments?

Don't forget to get an Engineering Certificate if you remove any seats.

Apparently in some ststes you can get booked for making illegal modificatiosn to the number of seats in teh vehicle.

In my 2000 model it takes about half an hour to undo all the bolts and remove the seats. From memory, all the nuts are welded in place so you dont have to get under the vehicle at all.The plastic covers over the bolts just clip off with a little help from a screw driver. I always replace the bolts to fill the holes in. As far as an engineering certificate is concerned that subject has been topic on any number of posts on this foreum. I take the view that it only applies for a permanent arrangement. But, who knows? I'll cross that bridge on the very unlikely occasion that it arises.

Without mentioning any names I know of an engineer with a state road authority who currently has the 2nd and 3rd row of seats removed from his 4wd. He is currently travelling through 4 states with the vehicle in this condition.

This is his area of expertise. If it's good enough for him its good enough for me.

Has anyone ever been booked for not having seats in vehicle.

When I went for a roadworthy I had to have the two rear seats installed, or it would have cost $110 for a certificate changing number of seats.
Sounded like a money making exercise more than safety.

Never pulled up over several years don't know if i was lucky or not.

I bought my Prado over 6 months ago in Vic. It had the back seats removed and a cargo barrier installed. I asked the bloke selling it if that was a problem for the RWC and it was never raised by the road-worthy guy.

Peter,
My bro-in-law was booked in Cleveland, QLD for not having the rear seats in his car.
He had to get a blue plate/eng's certificate or put the seats back in. This was, at a guess, about four years ago.

Mark,
They may have different laws in Vic to Qld.

Might be worth while checking out before you sell in due course.

I did this about 3 days ago and I assure you no bolts are welded in. There is a total of 8 bolts holding in the middle row, a couple of plastic moulds and 1 small piece of flat bar and out they come. Could be 14mm bolts, might have to check that one.
Don't forget to either put the bolts back in or seal up the holes with silastic too.

I have a Prado and the third row of seats are designed to come out. Being a traffic copper I don't think I would be writing out a roadworthy on a 4wd w/o middle row providing there was something else in place i.e. fridge, gear, mattress. But if it was a pretend car i.e. sedan or s/wagon, then there would be a good chance of a r/w.
