Hi, we're in Coolgardie and my bloke is looking at getting a turbocharger for his ancient HJ75 Landcruiser. There seems to be quite a range available, do any of you lovely people have one you can recommend? We don't quite know where to start.

There are a number of good systemes out there, DTS and Denco spring mind. Your best bet would be to speak to someone that fits them such as Robson Bros in Bently or TLC in O'Connor. Both are good and will give you solid advice.

I would reccommend that you go a water cooled system rather than an air cooled system.

is it 2H or 1HZ?
Also on very high kilometer engines there is the very substantial risk of blowing them apart as the engine internals have already had a long life but are now forced to cope with the added stresses from the turbo. Also a Desludge would be high on the priorities as the oil galleries are probably full of muck, not good to have in a new turbocharger.

Thanks. It's a 2H. His mechanic is against it and isn't fond of non-factory turbos. But jeez it's a sluggish dreadful thing. The engine had a complete rebuild about 25,000k's ago and it hasn't been used much in the last year. What are the pitfalls (if any) of installing one?

Linda,

I have a aftermarket one on my 2H 60 Series Cruiser. It's a (water cooled) Garrett TO3 & it's been on for a 100,000 k's. The vehicle has now done 254,000k's & I wouldn't be without it. Contary to belief I don't have any overheating problems & the vehicle pulls like a freight train up hills & on the flats. The best money you will ever spend if you intend to keep the vehicle. To give you an idea a friend has the same as mine without the Turbo & when I accellerate he just disappears in the distance at a ever increasing rate of knots & within about 5 minutes on a straight run he is just a blur in the distance. He just can't believe how quick I power away from him. My vehicle is totally reliable & will fire up at the first hit of the starter after a month in the garage & fuel consumption is on par with a normal 2H. As I said it's on hills that you will notice the great pulling power & the added benefit that once in 5th gear you stay that way when cruiseing on the H'way. Enter a different world of motoring Toyota 2H's are like Nissan 4.2 diesels unbreakkeable, I would take no notice of your mechanic ! !

Linda,

I think a member of this Forum (120 Cruiser) has one for sale at a great price. I think it's a DTS. He has his own business & I'm sure the Turbo would be as he has stated in good condition. It's a very good buy & a great price if not sold. It would be worth the small amount of money to ship it across.

Linda the 2H engine wasnt made for the turbo. However a turbo is ok when used in conjunction with Exhaust Gas Temperature guage.(EGT)

Once your exhaust gases reach a certain temp on a long hill or when overtaking ,its time to ease off on the pedal.
You must also have the boost set at a lower level than a factory turbo
Turbochaged engines normally have thicker pistons that are oil cooled from inside with tubes that squirt oil at the piston.
The 12HT ,which is the turbo version of the 2H, also has a stiffener plate on the block to stop warpage

Most of the turbo kits in Australia are Garret turbochargers and the companies selling them add their own adapters and plumbing.

AXT is another company selling them, most of them are ok these days.

Thanks blokes. I had trouble finding the thread again. This is a busy forum!

We checked out the Denco website and the prices frightened Pete a little, but it's on the cards that he will get one shortly. Just needs to save a little more to cover the exhaust.

Bantick Brothers? I thought they only built trailers and stuff?

I think the mechanic just doesn't want to do it, but I wouldn't let him anyway. I'd rather Pete take it to Perth quite frankly and get it done down there. Probably cheaper in Perth too. The car mobs up here seem to think everyone is on a miner's wage.

Thanks again for your help. It's is much appreciated.
Linda and Pete.
