hi, we are heading somewhere in South Aust in the coming school holidays and can't seem to make up our minds where, we were thinking that it would be nice to go somewhere different to our normal haunts- mainly Yorks Pen. we where even thinking of going to
Kangaroo Island, has anyone had some good experiences there? we would also like to find a
park that has a fire place ect as this weather that would be an extra bonus. We do go 'bush type
camping' but fell like the caravan
park type this time. please note we don't own a 4x4, just the commodore and a pop top and a dog. so if anyone can offer (nice) suggestions as to
places they like in SA and we can look into it. thanks from gonebush.

Bit further out but
Lincoln National Park Is a really nice spot and mostly dirt. Some campgrounds and areas are 4x4 only but there is still plenty to see and do. It is about 20mins from
port lincoln.

The
Flinders Ranges should be good. Lots of greenery, walks kangaroos. You don't need 4wd either.

hi, yes i was thinking about the Flinder's rangers, but wasn't to sure about some of the roads, as when i was a teenager we use to go there but a lot of the roads were dirt and we needed to drive through creeks and i wondered what it would be like now. i vaguely remember something about not being able to take our dog there but can't remember if that had something to do with him being a German Shepard, we only have a foxy now. thanks.

Hey Gonebush,
we went up towards the
Gawler Rangers a few years ago with our German Shephard so were obvlously limited with where we could go. We rang
Mount Ive station and although they say no to dogs if you are prepared to ring them and arrange it they will usually be ok with it. We spent a week there and it was seriously one of the best
places we have camped at. The people that own the station are very relaxed and have no issues if you want to have fires - they even provide firewood for you at no cost. They also offer a wide range of accomodation, from
bush camping sites (powered and unpowered with bathroom facililites and a
well decked out
camp kitchen), shearers quarters through to some very lush rooms. They also have the only entrance to
Lake Gairdner so if you stay there you can cruise up and check it out. Bear in mind, it is a working station so if you do bring your dog you will need to be mindfull to not let him/her run around loose.
Its about the same distance as the Flinders (wilpena) from
Adelaide and is easilly accessible by 2wd (they do have some 4wd tracks in case anyone else is interested).
There are lots of other things to see besides
lake gairdner and they offer maps and a small
shop with supplies as
well and is very
well priced for accomodation. We were there when the owners were around and it was a very communal atmosphere with all guests invited in for evening tea/coffee and a chance to show off each others photos.
Its also nice to go somewhere not so mainstream.
As far as kI goes, excellent spot for
camping but expensive to get over there and this time of year its damn cold.
Have a nice trip
Cazz and Dave

i went for a search on the net and Mt Ives station does look quite good, and hubby will love to see
Lake Gairdner (being a speed head) i think we will definitely give that a go one day, i think we have made up our minds this time to give the Flinders a go.
your right about the cost of going to the Island, it works out with us, our daughter and the van and a car of course costing us over $400, we figure we can go a fair distance on $400 of fuel (even more we are on gas).
thanks everyone for the suggestions.

Flinders will be good but if you are taking your dog you will be limited as you cannot take dogs into national parks.
Parachilna gorge is a nice place to go, its just north of the NP and is not in the NP so you can take your dog with you there.
