Hi all,
Search function didn't work for me so I ended up here.....
With the rise of USB car chargers for PDAs, GPSs, MP3 players, phones and lots of other stuff has anyone come across or made a multi plug charger?
Am I right in thinking they are all 5.5 volts?
Thanks,
NickR

Nick,

I know jaycar do have some multi-purpose car chargers for mp3 players/pdas/phones etc etc. Might not be what you are after though.

Nick,
USB can charge anything below 5volts. I use the cigarette plug type for my Ipaq, mobile phone and Bluetooth GPS.
I haven’t tried it, but I can’t see why a small 4 port hub wouldn’t work to charge several devices at once.

The standard USB puts out 5.0 volts to a maximum of 0.5 amp (=500mA).

The device optionally communicates with the PC to set a lower current limit

Tandy and Dicks Smith (same owners/company) sells one that plugs into your lighter and then you plug your USB cable into it, this allows your to have one charge for different USB cables with the different size ends. Costa about $20 last time I looked.

Has anyone else found these USb chargers to be next to useless. I have gone through several wireless mice that have been recharged via USb and none seem to last long (have replaced batteries etc etc)

The only one I have found any good is a Belkin that has a base station/cradle that has a 240v adaptor for the charging side of things.

Maybe you'd be better off buying a 240v inverter and charging them that way

That's what we did. We got a 240VAC to 5VDC plug pack and we run it via an inverter. It is capable of 3.0Amps but we plug only one device in at a time and these are usually never more than 500mA - 900mA.

A word of caution though, 240VAC inverters are quite capable of killing you so use them safely and watch for chaffed wires - a common occurrence in moving vehicles.

Cheers,

Russ.
