I am often mused by the amount of 'must haves' available to us 4WDers. There's mapping computers, generators, on board showers, microwaves,
inverters, 12v fridges, and if you think about it the list goes on & on.
I must admit I'm one of those who can't got to a 4WD show- without walking out with a 'must have'.
What's prompted this?? I've just (yesterday) changed house. The 'new' residence is just 2 years old. Where the fridge locates not only is there a power point- there's also a
water tap (for those devices with on board ice makers), a internet connection & a TV socket !!! Just to keep the beer cold !!

Ahhh but there is a more important feature on these types of fridge....
AUTO reorder of the beer!
(Not sure if anyone provides that service here though)

12v microwave ? I'm still enjoying cold sausage rolls. The hot
water comes in a thermos, and I'm leaving the puter at home this trip as I have paper maps and its not remote enough to worry. No boom box triple CD stacker...I want to hear if the engine and tyres are Ok. No generator or desal plant as we're staying in accom not
camping. Not much recovery gear needed.
Ahh...the LOW tech holiday :))

It is a world wide phenomenon, a study/experiment was recently done in the USA where a group of students went 1 year without purchasing the "must have items" all they bought were the essentials [ food, shelter, clothing ] and at the end of the year they found that they lacked for nothing where just as happy and had saved money.

Not only the developed world! Here in Ghana must haves include mobile phones (even those that cannot really aford calls), DVD players etc etc...
I am also a gadget freak, but draw the line at an internet fridge LoL! I know there is lot's of rubbish out there, but laptops connected to GPS and sat phones, dual batteries and 12v fridges etc are great - and to be honest part of the fun is setting it all up (at least for me). IMHO for me it is relaxing to tinker with the vehicle/kit and get it just the way I want! Learn lots too. But when push comes to shove it is still about enjoying the outdoors and sleeping in the bush. Unfortunately (or fortunately!) here there are no 4x4 shows or ARB type outlets... but, with the internet and a CC plus a little bit of shipping time and cost anything is possible (funny how I can organise helper springs and a fridge from South Africa to a remote Jungle
camp but the G/F's birthday pressy is a challenge!!).
Gadgets, got to love 'em
