Heading for the Simpson via Oodnadatta in a convoy of 5 vehicles next Friday. I hope I can sneak the maximum number of blankets in the vehicle before I'm caught. Last year in Sept. the desert was soooo hot. What a contrast this will be.
One or two hot water bottles? That is the big question. Can't wait. Chris[Christine]

I think I might be able to sneak the 2nd one in. Mind you his nibs is pretty nervous about the cold as well but of course won't own up to it. Chris.

Back to the grind in mid July. Only a short trip. We hope our 20 something kids don't have party central in our house in our absence! They're actually the sort you can trust. I hope you enjoy your trip also. Cheers, Chris.

What the 20! something!? You run a refuge house?
I got two teenage boys at home and yeh I think I can trust em :)

Will be interested in how you find the tracks, fuel prices and path you take.

Have a good weekend

Sorry looks like we'll miss you. We leave Birdsville to cross the SD on Mon 6th Aug. We leave Alice on the 13th Aug, across to Wiluna and up the Canning Stock Route, home on the 6th September'ish.

Would love to say hello to anyone out and about during that time.
Practicing the 5 'P's at the moment. :)

Edward,
Our kids are in their twenties, not 20 of them. How could you afford to travel if you had to support 20 kids? Chris.

Ed,
I will be out that way around that time. I am heading to Exmouth and back.
Our paths may cross so I'll keep my eyes open.

Was up around the eastern side of the Simpson recently - indeed it was frosty quite a few mornings - if the sun is out early, no worries - but if its overcast and there is a breeze, it near on finishes you off up there - take snow country gear and you can't go too far wrong - in the north Flinders last week, we went to bed dressed like polar trekkers - and needed to (-2 C) - frost inside the tent !

Our tent is on top of our camper trailer (not a tent as such therefore) - I reckon its actually colder off the ground though ! We found unfrozen wet gear at ground level, but gear off the ground was frozen - one winter is not enough to get the ground really cold it seems - we sleep on a 100mm foam mattress in the trailer, inside a quality zip together double sleeping bag (synthetic fill)...... should we camp at -2C again, reckon we will take a woollen underlay for the mattress - polar trekking wear would still be the go but !

We have a double sleeping bag inside a double and a woollen blanket under that. We THINK we should be ok. Just to add to my worries I have developed a head cold. Funny thing is I still can't wait. It's either in your blood or it's not I reckon. I need to get off this site and pack. Cheers, Chris.

-2 for us too recently at Silverton (near broken hill), sleeping off the ground in a camper, I slept in my jocks, socks and a t-shirt, in a -8 degree sleeping bag done up (not used as a quilt) with a polar fleece blanket on top - cosy all night. Ice on outside and inside canvas top in morning. Had to watch the condensation under the mattress though. Water pumps froze closed!

You will stay warmer in your own sleeping bag, not one zipped together (more air inside to chill). Maybe warm the bags up around the fire prior to slipping into them to ensure you are not cold getting into bed (be careful though)

Our 1 and 2 year olds slept on the ground on s/I matresses, in -5 sleeping bags, with a few layers on, and found a blanket fell off anyway, but would make them too hot.

Beanies help those who are follically?? challenged (like me!)

Hope this helps

D-Jack

Clear and sunny, very little breeze in Birdsville today. Min 4 and max of 20 today - makes a nice change from 0 degrees. Frosty in SD though. Have a good time.
