Please Help!
Setting myself up for our trip, installed a new Uniden uh015sx with a 6db 1200mm fibreglass antenna mounted to the bullbar. Have power connected but am not picking up any signal. What have I missed? Do I need to tune the antenna and if so how do I do it?

No tuning required, as they are pre tuned. Have you shorted your coax accidently ? Is the bullbar earthed ? Do you have a signal to pick up ?

squelch set too high?
Jump on the truckies channel (40) or for the Pacific Hwy (29)
and ask for a radio check. Alternatively, see if you can get a revertive from your local repeaters by keying the mic.

Hi 4musketeers
Excuse me if the items below are dam'n obvious however I do not know your level of expertise on radio use:
1) Firstly try to avoid transmitting until you know for sure you do not have an antenna problem.
2) I assume your squelch is not set too high?
3) If have you a small handheld or another person with a UHF to try transmitting to you. If you are not picking that up then "we have a problem Houston"
4) Check your coax cable to ensure it has not been damaged in the installation process
5) Check to ensure the big plug (PL259) has not been pulled away from the coax.
Cheers
PeteS

I had a similar problem. Is your bullbar aluminium? If it is then you may have an earthing problem due to oxidisationat the pont where the bull bar is attached to chassis. Run a short length of 12v 20amp cable to act as an earth wire, with one end attached to the aerial mounting bolt and the other end attached to a radiator mounting bolt.

Poor choice of radio if I must say so, you will have listeners saying "AYE what'd say " , because you will sound like your trying to talk with a mouth full of pubic hair, but too late , your've spent your money without checking previous posts on the subject, I know, as in my profession I use the UHF and talk to others all day long , Of course there will the know-alls who think they know, the ones who might use it a couple times a week if their lucky , The choice of radio should have been GME, Icom, Kenwood, or Vertex Now Ive said my piece and there will be no further comment from me in this post.

Hi Dusty
Tell Doug that we use uhf radios in our plumbing business. I have a Uniden in my
work truck, and a GME in the office, on a charger, with a aerial mounted external,
no PUBIC TRANSMISSIONS at all, must be lucky huh.
Cheers
Daza.

4musket, Take no notice of Doug's post. He is stirring the pot. I have a Uniden hand held (half watt) with head set for my motorbike and a GME TX 4400 in the 4wd. They both work very
well. The hand held is only used for bike to bike contact over a range of a few hundred metres but the signal I am told is very clear. Doug may of course have a very poor speaking voice hence his experience of being told that he sounds as if he has a mouth ful of pubic hair!!
Don't discount the possibility that the radio is faulty. The first Electrophone I bought was so if all the other things check out (squelch, antenna) have the radio checked.

You clowns just don't get it do you, No where have I said a Uniden is not going to work for you, of course you will get many years of service talking to others with it, But when you lot start talking with it ...tell me now , can you hear yourselves , NO you can't, you have not the slightest idea what you sound like on someone else's radio and yet you try and tell me I don't know what I'm talking about, how many of you blokes have taken the time to actually listen to the incoming signal ,I know of one Member only that will back me up on this because he has been doing some listening , he has taken an interest and he is in Qld, but then I guess if your using a crappy Uniden the Uniden's reciever is just as bad as the transmitter so you won't know any difference, you use the radio ....what a couple times a week ...if your lucky, Some of you wouldn't know Schitt from Clay ,

Doug, I have multiply vehicles with these radios so I along with many others DO know what we are talking about. Give it a rest, take a pill or something and please stop abusing all the
well informed people on this

So your going to shoot your mouth off and tell me I don't hear what I hear , BS as I said I do ask the truckies what type of radio and as I said everytime I hear a distorted radio the answer is Uniden , now don't crap to me about the enquiries I do many times out on the road, I did say to a driver a couple weeks back as he was talking to someone else i just said hey mate that Uniden sound awful, he came back with "how the hell did you know that" , I didn't tell him actually. but as you guys know all there is to know about Radio's from your lounge room I guess I will just let you crap on to each other ,

Maybe the Doug T (WA) Uniden problem is limited to trucks. I've never had a problem in any 4WD convoy with radio reception from any brand but often hear garbled noise from trucks. Just a thought.

Similar problem with a mate's radio . Found in the end the connection in side the antenna was a push in type and kept falling out . I had to drill right through the end connector and solder it . Then , when pushed in , silastic the cable underneath to take the weight off the connector . Also , agree about the earthing . Make sure it's earth to the vehicle anyway . Being double earthed won't hurt . Cheers Errol
