G'Day Craig, I can't help with fishing spots but when you say "a bit late" I assume you mean the time of year. We have approx 5 vehicles leaving Toowoomba on the 29 September so if you are late than we are in trouble. As for the fishing the later you leave it the better it will be simply due to water temps. Naturally the later months are also hotter and there will be more mossies, midges etc but I can live with that. Cheers Troopytrek

best thing to do is get a copy of northern fish finder book, will tell you everything you need to know, spots , types of fish, boat ramps, gear etc, waypoints
really recommend it to anyone heading north. cheers

Craig, the Seisia jetty is an ace place for a fish. Get there nice and early, 5am-6am, jig some live bait off the jetty and away you go. Plenty of nice mackeral, queenies and noah's aswell.
Enjoy

And if you do get that far, for an adrenaline rush go up to Fly Point and flick poppers off the rocks. Hook big a queenfish and watch the sharks fight over it. If you get one in you'll be doing well.
Fly Point is opposite the eastern tip of Albany Island. From Somerset (site of the graves of Frank Jardine and wife, plus others) keep going another kilometre or so to Fly Point. Some heavy sand along the way, OK as long as you don't stop in it.

hi Craig w, sounds like a great trip and with your son you could'nt ask for more. I'm from down in Adelaide, so all the fishing tackle you use here is just for catching bait up north. take plenty of big heavy gear you will need it. i use to be a catch and keep everything type fisherman but after spending a week at Cains and seeing what the reef was like and the wonderful fish swimming around, i am a catch and release person now. most times i don't even bother fishing, just enjoy what nature has to offer. have a great time.
Shane.

Craig,

Not sure whether you are taking a boat, but if not, a couple of tours are recommended..

We did one out of Weipa and also Seisia

Trip report is at Site Link and no doubt you will really appreciate Day 10, your son will appreciate Day 21 - my young bloke's first ever catch - a 1.08m Queenie! ;-)

That time of year can highly recommend the wharf at Weipa. Its not a matter of whether you catch fish but just how big they'll be.
But be warned, some BIG fish inhabit the waters around there.

Hi Craig,
Mapoon is not a bad spot to camp at Cullen Pt.Go to Weipa then head north. The ranger will hit you up for a fee which is about 5 bucks per night p/p and 30 bucks p/week per vehicle. There is a shop in the community. There is a shower/toilet.You can fish off the beach if you dont have a boat and can be tops at times.Watch for crocs at all times.
Weipa also has some good landbased spots.North Australian fishfinder book will help.
Cheers,Mark.

Craig,
We just got back from 4 weeks fishing the west coast just Nth of Weipa, I would advise going there as late as possible as the fishing has nearly shut down.
We had to work hard to find fish that we willing to take lures in the creeeks.
Water temps dropped with the cold snap and shut a lot of the creeks down.
Cheers,
Bluespot
