Hello fellow forumites - I have been looking at a mid-90's GQ Patrol diesel (non turbo) with auto transmission.

Nice straight body, low mileage (sub 160k with log books) and seems to have been looked after fairly well. Recent servicing may have been less frequent over past 20k (perhaps 2 services in that time). All fairly stock standard vehicle no visible under body damage or rust/dents. Auto fluid seems nice and pink with no smell.

Have had a look through archives here and have read through this site: http://www.gqpatrol.com/ (nice site - but appears to be down at the moment)

I was wondering if there's anything that anyone here might be able to comment on regarding the 4.2 diesel/auto combination. Is the fuel economy comparable with a manual/petrol combo? I know it won't be a race car and I don't think I will mind that but is it at least bearable? Seemed OK on the short drive I took it for.

I would imagine the auto should cope with the non-turbo diesel donk no problems. Is the frequency of servicing on these transmissions as critical factor to their operation? Such as every 12 months like some carsor are they a bit more forgiving?

Is 4WD-ing descent an issue with these autos? In town i didn't really get a chance to test this part of the truck.

Anything anyone could add would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Sorry to not answer your question mate but if you don't mind me asking.....what are they asking for it? We are researching the diesel GQ ourselves.

$15k for this one - not a bargain but probably on the money for what it is worth

155,000k's, a few service issues to attend to but otherwise my mechanic tells me it is in good condition and that it has a strong motor in it

body is all nice and straight and no rust in it. no under body damage and interior is immaculate

hopefully a few good k's in it for me as I have decided to buy it

The auto transmission and relatively high transfer case gearing in the GQ would not be ideal for steep descents. I would be looking elsewhere if you regularly go into steep country.

I had a GQ Auto, and it was brilliant.. Originally I was told only 300 were made in 4.2 Auto, and the amount I've seen around I'd believe it. They are rare as honest pollys.

Decent is not an issue if you know what your doing. On road, off road, hard core , easy wheeling, towing, touring, sand driving, I cant speak highly enough about it.. I hate the manual I have now, specially for city driving, takes it in the hole.

Autos need servicing, which is only an oil change, and probably a second oil cooler on it is a good suggestion, although I never did in the 4+yrs I owned it.

It cant be that bad, Im converting the GU 4.2 to Auto.

Hoping the site will be up again next couple of days, the server was hacked apparently.
