I have a 2000 model patrol serviced every 4500kms and the best oils all around and filters 4500kms also penzoil or penrite. whatever i can get my hands on at the time. Fith gear let go at around 100,000 kms but dont tow anything.
The turbo blowing at around 115000kms and now the injector pump and the third piston letting go all due to nissan not fully checking the problem the first time now need to get the engine fully rebuilt i think half of the people that work at nissan are just rookies and just
bluff their way through the job and cant read their computer properly.
All they seem to do is tell you what you wanna hear but not the proper answer any how see how it goes after the rebuild if not happy will buy one of the new toyotas at least they have got a better name and dont treat you like s..it

Are Nissan paying for the rebuild, or is it out of your own pocket??
If you are paying for it, Why bother, do what so many others do and fit a 6.5 Chev and be done with it.

Yep, if you like the rest of the vehicle and don't really want to change, I can vouch for the Chev as being a great option. Sorry to read of your dilema....whichever way you go, you're gunna be out of pocket big time.
I can certainly understand why so many people are deserting Nissan and going to other makes. ;-((

by puting in a chevy engine does that affect any insurance matters as being once a 3 litre engine and what other mods do you have to do to the car to suit that size motor

Where are you located??
Places that do the conversion, like Brunswick Diesels have everything included in the price like Engineering certification, Warranty ECT so it's all OK on the Insurance side of things and it's all nice and legal.
member Bilbo had a 2.8 Patrol converted last year i think it was, there are a few good rite-up's floating around in the archives about the hole escapade, also i am sure Roachie can tell you about the Pros and cons of the set up.
Cheers.

Port Wakefield etc. (time permitting etc of course).

Mucky,
Interesting to see that after over 100 hits on this thread it has barley battered an eyelid.
Seems to be that this is just natural progression for the Nissan 3litre and no one has any answers for it...INCLUDING NISSAN!!
There should be an Australia wide legal action against Nissan for their crappy $55000 4wd thats dies at around 5 yrs of age ( 100,000klms )
Soz m8 my prayers are with you.

My 2.8 is still charging strong at 9 years and 195,000 km, at least I know that it wont decide to let go anytime soon. I still wonder if it was the correct decision to drop the RD28 for the ZD30. Few of them may had head issues but there is no fear about them chucking a bender. The only stigmas attached to the 2.8 is turbo lag and that they are as tough as old boots (4wd monthly quote).
my few cents worth, doesn't do a damn thing to help old mate though.

I had a Toyota like that once. It spent most of its time in the workshop
I swore I would never buy another Toyota.
But I did, albeit a much older model. And that old rust bucket was one of the best offtrack wagons I ever owned. Pity it rusted out on me...lol

We've got a 2002 patrol 3.0 TD and have clocked up 150000 KM's and have had no issues with it. Over summer it's used to tow a ski boat (about 1.5 tonne) just about every week which is about 150km round trip. We also have a camper trailer that we tow around on our treks. We've been most
places with it including some pretty challenging country side and it just keep on going every day - wouldnt swap it for anything else.
