I am heading off from
Newcastle next weekend for 3 months, mostly in WA. Will go across Nullarbor, then Kalgoorlie, lower section of Canning, then
Pilbara and Gascoyne. The plan was to return via
Hopetoun,
Esperance Cape Arid NP and Nuytsland N.R., but how wet/cold is that section likely to be in September? Should I stick to this plan or spend more time further north and leave this southern coast for a summer trip? Not sure when that might be!

Hi Mal,
As my
forum name suggests I live in
Albany so I might be able to help you with your question. I guess it all depends on what your definition of wet/cold is. September is still in our winter here and during this time of the year we get weather systems coming through every few days. These can hang around for a day or a week. But in between the systems we get a few days or cold mornings followed by warm usually windless days. If you are in the area in between the weather systems you will enjoy your
camping but if a front goes through and you’re in a tent then it will be miserable. The weather here doesn’t stop us from going
camping at least once a month. Some weekends are magic and sometimes we wished we stayed at home. The added bonus of being on the south coast during the winter is the whales.

We travelled in September and the weather was cool but not uncomfortable. I think it rained once. Some "must see" things to do:
1 - Head of the Bight whale watching
2 -
Eyre Bird Observatory is worth the drive out to
the beach
3 - The track from
Exmouth to
Coral Bay that runs behind the dunes.
4 -
Coral Bay - a great spot
5 - Karijini - highlight of our 2 month trip
Enjoy

Hi Mal,
Unless you like cold weather then stick to the north
Every time I've been to
Albany outside summer it's blowing a gale, while
Esperance outside summer has always been raining.
There are some really nice
places to visit along the coast down there, but it's just the wrong time of the year to visit.
Cheers, Will.

Hi Mal. Coming from
Newcastle the cold and rain should not worry you. To me both have there attractions, Lots to see north&south. Do both then come back and
spend more time in which area you like. Brian

Hi Mal.
Most answers are covered, I tour S/W corner of WA regularly, mainly in the SUMMER, North of
EXMOUTH is WINTER Territory,
ALBANY area is SUMMER Territory, that's if you wish to get out there and enjoy the Outdoors. I suppose it depends on who is there to keep you warm. Good luck whatever you choose.

Thanks to everyone who contributed. Will just see how it goes. If we are having too good a time further north then might just leave the south until next time. The weather info on exploroz was what got me thinking of giving it a miss in Sept.
Hope to see some of you around the traps.
