Dune Flag

Has anyone tried using a disused fishing rod for a dune flage pole? It's nowhere near the 12.5mm thickness of advertised ones (for $80 or so!). Would a fishing rod stand up to a few weeks useage as a flag pole?

Might be a silly question, but how do you attach it to the vehicle?

Sorry for taking so long to get back to you. What I did was find a piece of pipe/tube that the fishing rod fitted into, crimped the end so the rod would not fall through, Then I just used a couple of hose clamps to secure the pipe to my bull bar.SWMBO sewed up a red flag the slipped over the end of the rod & hey presto. The pipe stays on the bar & when I need a flag I just slip the pole into the pipe. Its been that way for about 10 years.
Ps I also removed the line runners from the rod.

I've seen lots of people use the. The wog poles are huge and have seen a few of them getting around. I have used an old 27 meg areal on the roofrack and that does ok too.

Some good deals from time to time at A-Mart as well.

Picked up a 12' surf rod (Jarvis Walker) and reel for $30 last year. (on special)

Have fun.

I have used one for two crossings of the Simpson, never a hassle, mounted on the roof rack you get and very good height.

We used a fishing rod for a dune flag pole on our Simpson Desert crossing last year. We fixed the fishing rod with cable ties and adhesive tape to the bullbar. The pole was very durable. Only the flag tousled after a week or so.

Some more pics from the Simpson Desert you'll find on

Have a save trip!

I use a 2 piece surf rod. Attaches to the bullbar with duct tape. And I put a bit of duct tape over the join, so it doesn't come adrift.

Fizz use the old solid fibreglass type rods as the hollow graphite ones snap far too easily.

How high should the dune flag be (from ground level)? Is red the preferred colour? I love Reto's one with the Swiss flag - and it would stand out well too.

About 15 foot (4.5m) is what the buggy clubs use from memory although most people for convienience only go up around 12 foot (3.6m) but mounted to the front bull bar can be seen OK.
Color? Any colour that contrasts against the red sand. From past observation a white bra strapped to a ploe stands out pretty well :-))
Cheers Craig..........

Craig, won't argue with the bra strap, but the flag needs to stand out against the blue sky and the clouds - thats usually all I see going up dunes :-)) Orange is the best.
Cheers

I had a 6metre Wog Pole. It is down to about 4.5 metres now. Every time I go throught the deserts another piece breaks off...lol Just cable tie it to the bullbar or use 100mph tape. Fishing rod should work well too.

Cheers

helps if i write about what it is eh?????????????????:):)

8 foot ugly stik, two piece. Easy to store in back of the Patrol and simply held onto bar with a few cableties.
The flag is what SWMBO came up with.
Large yellow section from an old flouro safety shirt, with the red trim from a safety vest, bloody thing can be seen for miles:).
She made a couple of tie's on the bottom edge of the flag to tie it to the rod, so that it can come off and i can still use the rod if we ever get into big fish.
The rod moves very little at 80kph, but will bend over nicely when passing through trees etc.

meow.

I bought a second hand fishing rod from cash converters ($5) & attached it to the bullbar with two ratchet straps. Used it for 2mnths along the canning & kimberleys ... hit plenty of braches etc & it is still fine. Can't say the same for the flag which was totally shredded by the end. have replace the flag with one of the $10 vinyl ones you can buy on the internet. btw you do need to put some tape over the joint to stop the pole coming apart
