Hi
I know that this has been discussed about earlier series cruisers but wondered about my 1997 diesel landcruiser non turbo re. gear box design and coping with towing in 5th gear. I know some say never tow in 5th others say over a certain speed it's ok some mechanics who specialise in landcruisers say it's not a problem. I'm towing a wind up van approx 1000kg.
Is this the same box as in turdo model.
Just trying to get a broader view and others experience.

In the lastest 4wd monthly (i think it that copy) discusses this issue, and states that loads over 1t, and or that draw heaps of wind/drag, should not be towed in 5th. me, i tow my 2t boat in 5th in the Patrol but rumur has it that the patrol running gear is a lot stronger than cruiser gear, so well i guess the choice is yours. But i wouldnt.
cheers

If you think the Patrols 5th gear is stronger than an 80 series 5th gear then your only fooling yourself.

Well I'll back you on that one Wayne.
In sheer comparitive terms an 80 series box is a lightwieght compared to the big truck gearbox of the Patrol. There was a problem in the GU 1 and 2 Series with the 5th gear splines being too short (I believe, awaiting the buckets of correctness) and as a result 5th would let go after the splines wore out very prematurely.
I was in a 2001 GU2 3.0l (DP chip wound up, EGR blocked, 3.5" straight thru exhust = 155kw, 480Nm on dyno) that this happened on, cost about $2500 to reapir as due to the mods Nissan fairly refused the warranty claim, it also had 185000 km on it when it happened. It had towed a loaded T-Van to the cape 4 times, Simpson ........ ect before this happened all in 5th gear when speeds allow, obviously.

The GQ/GU big petrol and diesel (3.0 Hand grenade inc.) had the strong box, the 2.8TD (mine) and the RB30 3.0l petrol had the Nissan 300ZX gearbox. The big gearbox according to 4wd Monthly makes the 80 series "fragile" in comparrison.

Hopefully this clears a few things up.

i agree, and believe as in my case, with the GU3 4.2 iTD, its the strongest drivetrain on the market....even comp truck whether they are nissans or tojo's run GU running gear.

Thanks Benny GU

Having had both boxes apart I can assure you that the Nissan 5th is far stronger in its supporting and housing than the Tojo. The gear itself is about half as wide again as the Tojo as it a FAR heavier duty gearbox, designed to be able tow its rated capacity with a far longer duty cycle than that of the 80.

I stand by my comments and I know that your wrong!. Stop trying to fool us.

Read previous post about the 5th gear spline problem, it was the late GU1 and early GU2 Series that had this and most were got under warranty. Happened when Renault took over making the gearbox, but Nissan is now again making the heavy boxes to the original design made legendary in the GQ. Apart from this there have been significantly less Patrols 5th go than Cruisers, cause its a stronger design with less power being pushed through it.

My 2005 79 Series TD had it 5th gear go at 43,000km my previous HJ75 2H blew its apart twice at 145,000km and 486,000km. Too much high speed (130km/hr) running across the outback with the camper on me thinks. Both of these gear boxes are the heavier model, the 1hZ cruisers all had a smaller (Ie Weaker) box that will go early if more power than standard is fed through it and it is asked to tow in 5th.

Hey John

No the gearbox is not the same as a turbo.

I have always towed trailers in 5th, but only at 100 kph or more with little or no drag, so I think you will be fine.

I have done it for years in a 100 series and 80 series.

Cheers Steve.

I think if you use 5th in light throttle applications you will be ok, the monent I hit a head wind or hill I always change down to 4th

: )

My non turbo 80 series slows down to where I need 4th gear in a headwind . . . orif it sniffs a hill.

I have always towed in 5th gear with my '91 GXL 80 Series Diesel with aftermarket turbo. Only drop down gears when required - i.e. overtaking, going up hill etc.

One thing I don't do is go over 100kph (which is the limit when towing here in WA).

I agree with the posts about dropping back to 4th when faced with circumstances that would put the vehicle under stress, eg, hill, headwind etc. Regardless of which is the better gearbox, I never tempted fate in my 80.

I now own a new TDV8 Toyota trayback with, I believe, the same gearbox, and I will be applying the same practices to it when towing.
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy
