Economist Martin Arnold believes the cost of fuel will edge lower, as the Australian dollar gains value.

"It's hit a fresh 18-year high and it's up to just under 85 cents," he said.

"That's going to have an impact on the prices that we import petrol for and that will flow through to the local market."

Bet it doesn't.

Hello, Its an interesting link.We just bought a diesel & are wondering what way the price is likely to go. Over about the last three months here in Newcastle Ive noticed that ULP has varied in price between about $1.15 & $1.48 whilst diesel in that period has been a bit more consistent at about $1.28 / $1.35. But Dont worry,Johnny is going to monotor the situation & spend some more of our $$$$ on a further investigation & enquiry into the rip off situation. LOL

Keep in mind that around 50% of the pump price goes to Johnny, so any investigation or inquiry will be nominal only.

It would be more benificial to consumers to review the fuel excise.

Stu050,

Exactly how does "50% of the pump price goes to Johnny" ? Do you have anything factual to back up that claim ? My understanding is that it is somewhat less than 50%.

Gramps,
I stand corrected.:)

When the price of unleaded petrol is $1.20 a litre, the federal government is collecting 38 cents a litre and state governments are collecting up to 11 cents a litre in GST.

"In other words, 41 per cent of the price at the bowser goes in tax," Senator Fielding said.

"It seems that while both the federal government and the Labor Party believe an income tax rate of 47 per cent on high income earners is unacceptable, a tax of 41 per cent on petrol is okay.

Hahahahaha and that 38cpl stays 38cpl whether the price per litre is 50c or $5. The other point is that we have the fourth lowest level of petrol taxation in the OECD.
