G'day all,
We're very close to leaving for our new lifestyle. Today I bought the latest edition of Camps4 Australia Wide. I started planning our trip from
Darwin to
Perth and because our caravan is self sufficient for at least 4 days we were planning on staying in rest areas. I had planned several stops and checked their GPS waypoints. I then went to the exploreOZ site to see if I could find some comment on the road condition and came across the GPS coordinates for WA. To my surprise the GPS waypoints were different from those published in the book. For example "
Roebuck Plains Rest Area is 18 00 43 S 122 35 33 E" thats according to camps4, but the one in exploreOZ is 122.592848 -18.012277. So here's the question, which one do I put in my GPS?
Any help appreciated
Peter and Dawn

Peter,
They're both the same. Ones in Degrees/Mins/Secs the other is Degrees and decimal degrees(or some other terminology). Use whichever your GPS is set up for.

Aaaahhhh I see what you may be pointing at. Exploroz is 1 sec more on both readings. Don't think it matters a great deal for what you're using it for.

1 second of arc = about 30 metres at that lattitude. Either waypoint should be good enough to get you there.

These are POIs you will need a GPS that can handle them.
Also I have listed the Garmin set in Members / member file swap at the top of this page in EO

G'day Doug, I have a Garmin GPS 12, will I still be able to put the coordinates into this machine without changing to min/secs? If so do I have to convert anything?

No it won't matter what coordinate format you use , I always use hddd'mm'ss.s , thats up to you , your choice, You can forget all about POIs , they won't work in the GPS 12 , it is a discontinued product .

You need to upgrade to one of these

G'day Doug, I gave that idea away mainly because I was having more than enough trouble with Oziexplorer maps. Thats one reason why I pulled the Garmin GPS 12 out of the bottom of the cupboard, I know it works and works
well, but it confused me when the waypoints were different in OZiexplorer. One thing that has happened with this discussion is that SWMBO has agreed to purchase a Nuvi310. So all those waypoints that I have put into the GPS12 I'll have to transfer to the new unit. Anyway thanks for all the advice. I'll also check the sites that you suggest. July 31st is when we will be leaving Coolalinga Caravan
Park(NT) and then to
Katherine, and then start heading west. You never know we might cross paths when we're in WA.

Peter- how did you go?
The Garmin GPS 12 is more than adequate for the job your doing.
Something I dont think anyone has mentioned - once you enter the co-ords into the GPS (camps 4 Co-Ord are in stated as 000 00' 00" Degrees, Minutes and Seconds) then change the GPS setup to Decimal Degrees 000.0000 - the actual location will not change - this make the two point comparable.
Note - the Camps 4 book on page four mentions the co-ord are in Deg, Min and Decmial Minutes - I disagree. I think they have got that one wrong. There all clearly in Deg, Min and Sec
Good Luck
