Hi All,

No doubt anyone interested or planing a trip shortly has already heard that we have been rained upon !
Almost all the dirt roads are closed and folks already in here are stuck. We had about 100 people caught with us for a few days, they let one lot get out ( but none in) and then it rained again.
Nothing much to tell except that if no more rain lets hope it is only a few days to a week till it opens again.
We have a truck load of fuel stuck in Kununurra & a stack of groceries and food stuck on another truck in Derby so supplies are a bit short. Flew in fresh food so no one is going without but if they open the road to 4 WD's a week before they open it to trucks, then fuel will be a problem till the truck is allowed to come.

Once the road is first open again it will pay to check that our fuel truck has been allowed through before depending on us.

Just what none of us need at this time of the year for muster or tourism but it's not unheard of, did exactly this to us back in 1986 as well and the odd year since.
Difference is that in 1986 days there were not hundreds or even thousands of people stranded all over the show as there was little tourism.
As I recall in 86 it did wreck our muster, all our trucks got bogged out on the station tracks. We got past that started to muster again and then in mid July it did it again, even more rain than was this time as well , 75mm overnight that time.

So please just check the open / closed status of roads and avability of fuel supplies from us before you head up the Gibb River and Kalumburu roads if your travel is in the near future.
cheers, Anne

Thanks for the info Anne - much appreciated!

We travelled to the Cape last year in May/June and spent the lead up worrying about all the water around and the roads being closed - never though I would be doing the same thing for our Kimberley trip when its so much later in the year!! but that's the way the seasons fall I supose!

We have been up to your station once before in 2004 and look forward to coming again later this year.

Thanks for the update

Thanks for the up date Anne, we were waiting in Derby for 3 nights and are now at Fitzroy Crossing.( We have been here for 3 nights too) The caravan park here is lovely so it makes the wait a bit easier. We are hoping to get started on the Gibb today and hope to be able to drop in to see you in the next week or so. Lets hope for no more rain. Mind you I think there are a lot of people both here and Derby in the same boat as us, I've heard a lot of people say they are waiting for the GRR to open.I've also heard on the caravan park grape vine that the road to the bungles will be closed for a couple of weeks, there is no road it washed away.

See you all soon

I've been to the Kimberleys twice. The first time was in 1978 and it rained. I was told it was only the second time since the war that it had rained at that time of the year.

The second time was in 1986 and it rained again. Back then they were sealing the last section of road between Fitzroy Crossing and Halls Creeek and I can remember driving across a huge plain of water south of Halls Creek with only the furrows left by the graders defining the course of the road.

My girlfreind (eventually wife), walked in front of the vehicle with a shovel testing the depth of the water for me. Aint love grand.

Hence the nick name.

Brings back memories that does. I drove the road a couple of times before the blacktop went on and on 1 occassion the side of the crews eating van fell out due to the corrugations about half way to Halls Creek!
The driver stuck it together with a load of builders clouts but it fell out again one evening when the lads were all leaning against it having a fag after tea.
That caused much laughter.
Then I worked on the first section when the tar was being put down.........Ngumban Cliff section I think it was called.
Great job and some great fun in Fitzroy on Sundays.

Hi Bushfix,
Sorry to be honest I no longer know what day it is never mind who has been or not ! The mind is a blank ( even more so that normal !) Only been home a week and it has been madness. First trying to catch up & then the rain , the phone is going non stop, I have hardly moved from the office. Joanna my daughter does the out the front stuff now days so I seldom see anyone.
cheers, Anne

Here's hoping it's dried out and everything is accessible in the near future as I'm heading up that way on 16 July for my two month honeymoon!!

*fingers crossed*
