The Tele seems to be giving creedence to our friends (sarcasm implied) at the Pedestrian Council of Australia who attacked the NSW Roads Minister, Eric Roozendaal for promoting drag racing and motor sport in general.

The story is open for public comment. The more of us who comment, the clearer the message to the Tele and the PCA. Please make your opinions known.

I wouldn't be losing any sleep over anything that D/Head says , the Industry of Motor Sports is too big for him to have any influence, He's just like all the other Bleedin' hearts and do-gooders who get a thrill out of reading thier activities in the newspaper, If I were an Editor of a news paper they would get no publicity .

Doug
I am not sure what to say, life goes on, young people come and want to change things for the better, your binders have changed because some young person has come up with something better and safer. The old things are good, but we have to conform and enjoy what is going on around.Mr footpath has every rite to say what he thinks whether he is rite or wrong is not the question, its he has the rite to speak, the same as you and I.
I suppose that your old man reckons that 1949 chevs were the best thing, but the newer cars just kept rolling along and no amount of winging and moaning changed that. Damn they were good cars, but who wants a car with cast iron pistons that leave the top of the piston on the top of the cylinder when one goes a bit fast. No Doug, we must move on with the times and try to enjoy life.

The paper most probably went to HC to get such a response, to stir the rest of us and get more hits on thier web site, so they can charge more advertising dollars.

Newspapers I am afraid are not in the business of reporting the news factually, but also creating an emotional link for a stir, and to promote that paper. You remember the name of the paper now? Job well done. Which paper or web site will log onto next for a follow up, job done even better!

" Stick up for your rights as motor sport enthusiasts."

But I'm not a motor sports enthusiast.

My, possibly incorrect, reading of the contributors here is that there are three main groups. For one group it's all about the vehicles. For another group its all about the outback. And for a third group its 'all of the above'.

I am in the second group, my vehicle is just a tool to get me where I want to be, which is out in the peace and quiet of the bush (generators permitting). If motor sports were banned tomorrow I for one wouldn't lose any sleep.

Howdy Greydemon,

I felt that this would be a good place to post this message because of the way in which 4wdrivers have been attacked by the PCofA for years now.

I was just using motor sports to refer to anything that is a sport which also involves motors. To my mind, 4wdriving is a motor sport. A lot of us do it for competition, as well as for recreation, and even then, it is still a sport in as much as recreational fishing is also sport, albeit non-competitive.

So people who drag race, or race rally cars, or V8's in some way have a lot in common with 4wd enthusiasts in that they promote the responsible use of motor vehicles for sport (I agree that some passionate 4wdrivers may not support drag racing as a sport, in which case they should just ignore the post.).

Anyways. Maybe I should not read the paper first thing in the morning at work.

Ando

Interesting logic Ando, and in the case of my first and third groups you might well be right. However you wouldn't (surely) claim that my daughter is a motor sports fan because she uses a car to get to her dance classes, or count me as a train enthusiast because I catch the train to Subiaco to watch the Western Force.

Stick with reading the paper, it would be a pretty boring forum if we all agreed with each other.

Now..... I have an Engel which is the best car fridge in the world and I wouldn't give you tuppence for a Toyota....

LOL Greydemon, while you may be a bit confused and befuddled with your choices of Engel and Mitsubishi - none of us are perfect, except me of course - I do agree with you regarding motor sports. Ban them tomorrow, who cares, no great loss.

Hi Greydemon

When your daughter is driving back from dance lessons and a drunk drives in front of her, she hits the brake pedal and the power brakes, hit the disks and the ABS and the collapsable steering collum, safety zone, seat belt, head rest and about every other lifesaving device in her car and all of a sudden you are a motor sport fan because that is where these things come from.

Have fun

Hi Gramps

No, that's not what I said, my point is that the development of these things would take years longer and may have never got to the standard we have today, apart from a few European manufacturers safety was not a selling point and the only reason we have it at all is because of gov legislation. In America the big three had to be threatened just to put in padded dash boards. Safety has only been a selling point for the last ten years or so. You would not think of buying a car today without disk brakes but how long did they take to go fro sports car to family sedan.

Have fun

Craig,

Yeah, I know what you mean but I think the developmental aspect attributed to motor sport gets a bit overplayed.

Hi Gramps

I know it seems like that but when you think of all the different types off motor sport, from F1, rally, LeMans type sports cars, European touring cars, Dakar, Tuff Trucks and right down to Go Carts the manufacturers have to be getting more from it than just sales because they don't generate sales like that.
I can remember watching the Big Pet and Leo at Bathurst racing in tucks and a lap sash seat belt, they used to slide all over the place, great fun.

Have fun

I think what Ando is trying to get at is that a lot of us are often vocal and critical about these types of articles, especially in regards to 4wd's, on this forum, yet we don't actually take any action. We just allow these ill-informed, self righteous sensationalistic clowns to have their opinions heard all the time. Whilst they are entitled to voice their opinions, so are we and we should.

As far as I am concerned, you can put a total ban on motor sports, but that wont solve your problem. Its human nature to push boundaries and experiment. Its part of how we evolve, and as long as politicians and bureaucrats keep putting boundaries in front of people, especially teenagers, they are going to push them. Unfortunately and too often its to the detriment of themselves, their families and often innocent 3rd parties.
