What tracks will be open during this time and where is accessable for camping. Yes I know it will be freaking cold but hey thats half the fun.

Looking at daro and surrounding areas not the heady heights of the alps

Thanks for any and all feed back in advance.

Trev
All the well known iconic tracks, plus most of those nobody hears about are closed.
They had heavy rain through there about a week ago and more (up to 200mm) predicted in next few days, so rivers likely to be high as well.
Can still have fun in the high country mid-winter, but might be better to look elsewhere.
Cheers

High Trev

Camp at Talbotville (near Dargo) , it and several tracks in area are not closed over winter - there will be plenty to do , with challenging river crossings thrown in.

Hi Muzbry

Just enough snow (saturday) , lot of fun as per post 46939 , and then moved on to check out Mt Separation damage as per post 47081.

Busy weekend , but this site is getting busy and easy to miss posts - my snow one thursday is almost 200 threads old.

Like Robin, was going to reccommend Talbotville. Easy 30 min drive from Dargo & remember to have a meal at the pub.

As mentioned earlier, be careful with the river crossings. They can rise very quickly & can catch alot of people out with unpleasant results. Also, as well as heavy rain, gale force winds are forcast meaning possibility of trees across tracks; in other words take a chainsaw. Yes it will be bloody cold.

Trev in winter we have seasonal closures over almost all the high altitude tracks in the Vic High country. On top of that 50% of the tracks normally open in winter are also closed in the area's effected by the bushfires. They are still not scheduled to reopen till the November long weekend with a handfull not opening till next year.
Have a look on the Parks Website
There is a map of the areas still closed followed by the reopening stratergy & the seasonal closures below that. Access is still pretty disjointed, so much so our 4x4 club local to the HC are taking trips to areas like the Pyrenees, Castlemaine & Beechworth instead avoiding the area all together.
Have a look at the Parks details & you will still be able to make a trip out of the tracks that are open.
Cheers Craig..............

Trev,

went up to Licola last Sunday - Snow down to 857m as per my reply on Robin's post.

If the weather stays as it is for a few weeks there will be a fair bit of snow cover making some of the open tracks impassable.

A month back I couldn't get across Wonnangatta River at Eaglevale or Kingwells bridge due to the river height. Kingwells is still out of action and you have to cross the river on an angle at the moment.

There is a lot rain forecast and if it eventuates rivers will be high and impassable. To get to Talbotville go via the High Plains Road and as someone has already pointed out - take the chainsaw.
