Im looking at buying a 3lt turbo patrol 96 to 2001 models. I have looked at past posts and are a bit concerned about reliability.I will mainly be doing general driving some off road and a bit of traveling with an off road camper long distances. The million dollar question is what models to steer clear of what model is best.Any helpful answers much appreciated, thanks

Do you mean the 2.8l 6 cylinder diesel or the 3l 4 cylinder diesel?
Cause the 3l 3 cyl didnt come out till umm 99 as I recall, so I guess you may mean the other one?

I have the latter tirbo 3l and it tows like nothings behnd it, and does all manner of up and down
hill 4wd stuff with aplomb. Its doesnt like concrete pylons in car parks, or sharp rocks near
Broken Hill.
Other than that its a great car. One day will it go bang? Who knows? No sense worrying tho.
If you are prone to worry, Volvo do a nice diesel

Better to pay a bit extra in fuel than thousands for a engine rebuild. If you are going to buy a 3lt than you need a post series 3 I think. The 2.8 were a better engine reliabity wise but geting long in the tooth.
If you want reliabity go the 4.2 diesels
Cheers Pete

Take the ZOOKI !
Or get a Navara Dualcab 3.0TD. No probs with these!! Only with 3.0TD Patrols

Mate
The 3.0TDi... they're great until they go BANG!
They tow
well, have heaps of grunt for what they are and are economical for there size.
I have to say I couldn't fault
mine as far as the engine goes but just had to sell it at 100,000k because the history of these motors gave me no confidence for its longevity.
It may never have blown up but once that warranty was gone, so was my nerve!.
If you do buy one...you want a guaranteed solid log book service history with an oil change every 5,000k. That's what I'd look for, if you held a gun to my head to but another one that is!
Good luck.

Evening Mate,
The 2.8TD ran in the GQ patrol from 95 ish till the GU came in late 97. In the GU it copped electronic fuel injection and an intercooler boosting power from 85kw to 95 kw and torque to 252Nm from 235Nm. The GU benefits massively from a chip and a decent exhaust and will still be good for, in my opinion, 400,000km. I have seen a GQ 2.8 with 610,000km and a GU 2.8 with 412,000km; both fine although did blow smoke, a common problem with the motor, though nothing to worry about. I have had a 2.8 TD GU Patrol for 195,000 kms and have nothing but confidence in it. It does lack grunt down low but once on boost it goes alright, certainly no slouch once rolling. It runs 33 inch BFG A/T's effectively overgearing it so the lack of bottom end is magnified but not obvioulsy so. It will be getting a 2.75" SS exhaust and Motsons chip by the end of the year as SWMBO has eased the purse strings enough for me to get my mitts in.
The ZD30 3.0l replaced the 2.8 in early 2000 and it is the 2000-2001 (Series 2) 3.0l patrols to stay clear of. That said as long as the motor stays together it is more powerful and torquey on boost than a non chipped 2.8.The 3.0l has a stronger gearbox than the 2.8 and slightly better fuel consumption.
Other options to consider are a GU DX 4.2l diesel Patrol or a GQ ST 4.2l diesel patrol. Both are extremely reliable, outrageously tough and reasonably economical.
Best option is the GU ST 4.2l Turbo if you can afford it. I would have bought one if they had been available when I got the 2.8l. Though 195,000 trouble free clicks later and I still have a big grin over my face every time I start it up..........

Purchase the Series III which commenced around October 2001 - not the series before this if you want to be sure you haven't got one of what the cynics around here call 'grenades'. Plenty of them on the market. We have been driving and towing with an early 2002 one and it has given us no problems at all. We will reluctantly sell it soon as we have bought an F250 for towing.

I have a new GU series IV 3L TD and it is a great touring wagon.
Like others have said, the series III on has had few problems.
The good old 4.2 diesel plodder is so reliable that people just don't sell them.
You will also find heaps of info on the Patrol4x4
