I'm thinking about selling off an asset to buy the following for a 120 prado (late 2006).

1. OME suspension upgrade $1590
2. ARB front and rear diff locks $3560

Could I also have some experienced comment on Cooper STT please? The current ST's have held up well in very rough cross country work (although I've had my fair share of stakes and buggared tyres).

Regards

Kim

Yeah upgrades look about right.

Forget Cooper STT's where you want to go. Plenty of info have been posted here on these tyres. Do a search and all will be revealed...lol

From memory you purchased a set of STT's. Leaving aside the fact there a radial, what were the problems you encountered (as distinct from cross plys).

Many thanks

Mainly sidewall fractures and cuts while traversing offtrack conditions. The sidewalls are very thin and in some desert country you have to run lower pressures. Turpentine stakes go through the sidewall like slicing through butter. Once the sidewall has a fracture it is very difficult to keep the air up to it as the fracture tends to widen due to the flexing of the tyre. Around $60 city prices will see tyre repairers weld the cut. None of the gaters my localbloke put ijn the tyres worked as they just fell off after a few kilometres and left the hole to flex.

STT's are very good in sand where there is little chance of staking. They are also good on gravel roads and bitumen of course and should give good kilometres if treated with care. The applications that I put the Coopers through ended up being a very expensive exercise for me and so I have returned to inch thick sidewall crossplies.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply. To a large extent I think I already knew the answer. It was only this morning that I Enquired about crossplies from a local dealer and received a blank look.

I sourced my MRF crossplies through my local Tyrepower outlet. Maybe you can organise to have a spare set of crossplies on splits when going extreme bush. My MRF's cost $180 each and that included a MRF tube as well.

Tyrepower are just down the road from where I live. I'll have a talk to them tomorrow morning.

I put the Goodyear MTR's on my 120 (LT265/70R17) and they are great. Noisy - but great!

Tread pattern near identical to STT, Extremely strong sidewalls (based on EO post feedback) and I think they were slightly cheaper.

Hi

Second the MTR's, yes noisy but that is why you have air-conditioning and a stereo, I am on my second set and they are great. Do not ask how long they last as I don't know as I only care about them stopping me and for a big tyre they stop my 3 ton cruiser like nothing else.

Have fun

Make that a third on MTR's on my 120 as well.
You can't beat them.

Hairy

Replaced the latte machine for a four post bed with inner spring mattress to put into the swag.

The asset is a camper trailer which I hardly ever use, and takes up room in the garage.

Suspension upgrade looks OK, but for installing lockers IMHO they charge way too much. I did it by myself, it is not particularly difficult especially considering that your car relatively new. Just time consuming. You can easy save $1000 and put them into something useful.
