Dad used to tow a 16' van with an EH Holden, can't see why 18" would be a problem.

Geoff,

Grey hair is hereditary, you get it from children. Baldness is caused by watching the Wallabies.

18" shouldn't be a problem at all. Dunno about 18' though. #8->

You need to go to the towing specifications for the ute in the handbook or from a dealer (or Redbook on line) and find out:

- the maximum towball weight; and

- the maximum towing weight.

Then weigh the 19' van fully loaded at a weighbridge and have the opereator check the weight at the towball. That is the best way.

Or get the tare weight and towball weight from the dealer and then add for a gross weight.

After doing all that just compare one with the other to see if you are within the limits.

I do not know the numbers for your rig but if (say) a 2000 Holden manual ute has a gross towing weight of 1600 kg (braked), some 18 ft twin axle vans could not be towed because their tare weight alone exceeds 1800 kgs. I know that some manufacturers make vans with a single axle to save weight, but then the towball weight could limit.

I agree with you EV700 & add that dont forget that around 70 per cent of your braking comes from your front wheels, so get yourself a quality weight distribution kit such as the Hayman Reese system. Its simple to set up & will provide you & your family and other road users with added safety. Good luck & happy travelling.

Gday
In 1965 I spent a plesant evening on the Victoria river in WA with a chap and wife and daughter . They were towing an 18' van with an EJ ute. They had come all the way from Melbourne and with no trouble.
I think what you are asking is" will it be legal"
