What Winch Will Fit

Hi everybody I just bought a 05 patrol with a factory fitted winch bar and was wondering what types of winch I can put in there as on the bullbar it states only to use the WARN X9.
I will only be using the winch very little, as I mainly do touring and want it just in case I am off with the family and get bogged by ourselves I don't want to spend too much on it.

I was looking at the ALDI winches and thought that might cope with what I will do with it but am unsure whether it will fit or not.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated

Thanks
Clint

X9 superwinch if you turn it upside down and silastic the drain holes and drill more on the new bottom..

G,day Clint

They are an Iron man winch rebadged, spoke to Iron Man like many others have on here and they assured me they are the exact same from the same factory in China.
They are made, rebadged and sold in bulk orders to all the Aldi stores throughout Australia, hence the cheaper price. why not? has a 3 year warranty!

I bought one last week and will be fitting it this weekend into a factory Nissan winch bar GU 06 mod, will let you know how I go

Cheers

If you spent $60k on a first class 4b, why would you go with some cheap bleep winch from aldi? Yipee 300 yr warranty, but does you no good once its dead and your stuck in the bush.

Im sure if you asked them nicely they can charge you an extra $1000, if that makes you feel better about your purchase.

Thanks for the info ingo57 I thought it may be the same winch as the Iron Man.
It will be good to hear how it goes once installed.
For the amount of times that I will need to use it I think I will be getting the Aldi one and save a $'s to spend on other mods for my new rig.

P.S. Good luck with the fitting

Truckster, you have not ansered ingo57's question.

What is wrong with the Ironman/Aldi winch?

What is wrong with a 3 year warranty?

I would think a company offering a 3 year warranty considers it's product better than one offering 12 months, or do you and Hero like paying more money for less?

I dont think warranty or even a company offering a longer warranty makes a product inherintly better than any others. I could warrant a cheap light bulb for 50 years as long as the cost of replacing the bulb was under the initial proffit made.

As with anything you get what you pay for, a 3-year warranty isnt going to help you if your truck is bogged leaking water in every oriface. Im not saying that the more expensive/well known winches also dont fail but there is good reason people are prepared to pay the extra on known quality.

I remember when Toyota were still offering 12 months warranty on their cars while Nissan & others were offering 3 years, is that because Toyota were of a lower quality? I dont think so. Mitsubishi now offer 5 Years, should we all be running out & buying one because they are better quality than a Nissan or Toyota? watch how fast I go.

Caevat Emptor, its your $ & your $60,000 truck that may just be stripped or drowed by saving a few hunderd $ on a winch.

Fair call ddr,

But the question was to truckster and I guess now you, still remains.

I havn't heard any bad reports on the Iron Man brand winches, obviuosly you guys know from experience that Im going to be caught out with a busted winch or any one else with an Iron man winch for that matter.

Caveat Emptor (let the buyer beware) .I am aware and there is proof that Aldi/ Ironman winches are exactly the same!

What is wrong with the Ironman brand winches?
Has anyone had an Iron man winch that has let them down?
Wheres the proof that I may be stripped 60k because of a winch?
Wheres the proof that these winches have a bad habit of breaking down when you need It?

Most Importantly, common sense must come into play when 4wding or touring, I wouldnt put my Patrol in a position of loosing it balancing on on any kind of winch, regardless of the cost..............Would You?

Cheers

All loaded questions there so Ill change them.

Apart from Price What is great with cheap winches?
Has anyone had a cheap winch that has lasted them 10 years with only basic maintenance, pulling them through all sorts of sticky goo & out of terrible situations?
Where is the proof that I WONT find my car stripped after leaving it on a track stuck because of a cheap winch?
Where is the proof that these winches NEVER break down when you need It & are better than more expensive brands?

As Truckster was saying, its your money but IF you ever were in the situation where you could lose your car/life because you saves a few hundred $ on the winch you will wish you chose differently. If you cant think of ANY situation that you MAY one day be in where it could happen then spend away.

In answer to your last question, Things happen when 4wding, even an expected tame situation can turn nasty quickly & usually when you least expect it. If your out & get in this situation it would be nice to know that you have backup resources that are reliable & up to the job at hand to get you home.
If you never put your 4wd into a situation that requires a winch, then why get one? They are not an ornament.

All hypetheticals mate!

And you still havn't told me " what is wrong with an Iron Man Winch??? besides its cheaper than others.

I have never owned a winch on 5 previous 4wd,s and have allways managed to get myself out of some very sticky situations by using my noggin, yes at differnt times I have thought it would be handy to have an electric winch. It is a luxury but not necessary.

As for leaving your car on the side of a track, I wouldnt like to do that on some of the trips I have done or I would end up dead.
Would you leave your car and walk out of the Simpson because your stuck and your winch wont work or would you dig it out, oh and also these days they have these devices called UHF's and Sattelite phones. LMAO

You can tell me everything that could go wrong but you cant tell me whats wrong with the Ironman winch.

Cheers

OK.....They have a pretty good reputation as being a good winch and just as reliable as others and they seem to be confident with this so they give a good warranty.

Theres a couple of rights!

Again: Whats wrong with the Ironman winch??

ahhhhhhh back from Perth at last... what a hole.

Now, who has mentioned anything bad about Ironman Winches? I mentioned Aldi winches.. And fwiw, I wouldnt say they are anything like the same spec as Ironman winches.. if you read the tests in the online maggo of AJ's teh cheap chink winch died within days, the Ironman one lasted outstandingly.

>> and why its not going to work when I need it???

Good for you, you go and find out for yourself if your Aldi winch will do bleep when you need it... I know one in our club that didnt work the first time that Neil tried it.

Truckster , If you knew anything about what your talking about you would know Iron man winches are made in china as well and if they are not the same, than Iron man Victoria dont know there own product when they say the Aldi winch is theres and exact same just rebadged. Why else would Iron man have there number in the Aldi winch manual.

If you are referring to the cheap unnamed ebay winch, different story.

Truckster,
You still have not ansewered Ingo 57 's question.

What is wrong with the Aldi/Ironman winch?

You rave on about your mate missing his Jackaroo, "from Ironman who designed and arranged the winches" ??!!???
But you do not give any info in what is wrong with the winch.
If "your mate" is that well informed, and you are such good mates, tell us what is wrong with the winch!
I believe the warranty phone no. for the Aldi winch is the Ironman no.

Ironman will fit. You need to rotate the clutch handle so you can get at it. Works fine. Good value.

Gday Clint

installed the winch today in about 3 hrs, everything went pretty smooth and there was two things that had to be changed to fit to a genuine Nissan bar.

1. Rotate Gearbox 90 degrees so the clutch lever is at the top when fitted, this is done by undoing the two allen head bolts on the chrome rods. Pull the gearbox off and you will find a heap of tiny allen head bolts, undo them all and rotate the gearbox 90 degrees then reassemble.

2. I had to get longer bolts that hold the winch in the Nissan bar, the top ones an extra 10mm longer and the bottom two 5mm longer than the standard ones.

Tomorrow I will put my old mans Patrol on the end of the cable it and give it a workout.

Cheers

if it is the same as other brands, rotating the end will now have the drain holes at the top... water wont drain back out when it fills up.

I have also seen the tear down of the ALDI winch on the other site that bloke seems to be happy with it.

Thanks ingo57

Gday Clint

Today I put the old mans Patrol on the end of the cable on a reasonably steep hill, pulled the cable all the way out to the red paint on the cable. I used the wireless remote from pobably 40 ft away, worked great.

The winch didnt seem to labour much 1 min on, 2 mins off and a after the full length of cable was taken up. I felt the motor and it was not overly hot.

Straight away I repeated this again for another full length of cable, by the end of the second pull the motor was fairly hot, but not that hot that you couldnt touch it.

All in all I was very happy with it, next step is to get some recovery equipment and go and try it in the bush to get a little more confidence and learn how to use it a bit better.

Hope this helps you with your decision

Cheers
