Hi there,
I'm about to buy a new GPS, Tom Tom & Garmin have both been recomended, any comments. My question - Do these units display your location co- ordinates. I guess they would be useful for checking Rd intersections etc when your gps mapping does'nt work. Lack of Rd signs in the outback can be a pain. Regards PEBE

They won't show track names in the outback, they may show some tracks as "unknown street"
You would be better off buying a PDA & installing a street navigation software & OziExplorer for the bush & Outback.

They do show Co-Ordinates in what ever format you want, as for showing outback roads the Garmins with City Navigator and T4A will show the names of the more major tracks as Tanimi ,Great central, Donohue, Plenty , etc
As Shaker suggested a PDA will show no more than a GPS with T4A installed,
The trouble with PDA's is that they are not water/Dust proof as is the Garmin Quest , it depends on how you want to spend ,
Check out the Johnny Appleseed GPS website and read the specs on what the different models do,

I feel the best choice to add T4A to is the Nuvi models, they still do Co-Ords and waypoints but do not store routes and tracks, The quest does both , the screen is small, the Street pilot range would also be a good choice with T4A installed,
also this would be a good choice but the price ...????

Doug,

How would I view co-ordinates for a position on the Nuvi 660?

Have you managed to do this?

Cheers

Yes they do for your first question.

Which model Tom Tom and which model Garmin are you looking at buying

If you buy the HP RX5765 pda it will come with the latest Tom Tom installed for about $485 , with this you can also install Oziexplorer CE and have the best of both programs. but it isn't as robust and waterproof like the real gps's.

A Garmin GPS like 60cx, 270c, Quest will have better features, but will cost more and the City navigator updates are over priced, Adding the T4A or Shonkymaps will be better for the outback than the Tom Tom maps.

The Garmin Nuvi range can also run the non garmin maps but it won't record tracklog.

I personally think the Ipac HP rx5765 is a better unit. it's also a pda which can be handy for a number of things.

The Nuvi 310 with the blue tooth hands free would be safer if your on the phone a lot while driving.

Before you buy either check for the price on the map updates. If you could hang on for a few months wait for the newer version maps, for the Tom Tom it should be Version 7 and Garmin Version 8.

Cheers Skippy

I have the Ipaq 5765 and fine it a good all rounder. I have OziExplorer CE loaded with the Natmap Rasters. You can have both Tom Tom and Ozi running at the same time which we do when out and about because you get the voice guidance with the greater detail of the Natmap on the screen.

We have a Garmin Etrex for use where the Ipaq would get wet or damaged.

Hi Paj

Wait till you want them to repair the Ipaq 5765,Hope you dont because their a pack of assholes with their warranty...If they dont repair it properly the first time, they will not replace it even if its been back 4 times...

Maybe their bleep policy has changed in the last 2 years, but i doubt it

Cheers
