Hi everyone,

I need your advice. I'm looking at buying a 2005 t/diesel auto GXL prado. It's in great cond, dual batteries, bullbar, spotties and window tint. The interior/exterior is spotless. It drives brilliantly.

The only downside is that it has done 230000kms. It has had regular services, most before they were due. The travel was mainly done between Perth and Meriddin (a distance of 300kms), so it was generally long running.

My main question is, would you be concerned about the high k's given that it was long hot running/ Also, are there any other things i should look out for?

Cheers

Macca

Wow! Was it ever switched off????

That is pretty high mileage in only a couple of years?

i serviced an 04 t/d prado today with 340000ks
no idea how they clocked up so many ks
serviced every 10000ks going by the books
customer just bought it and wanted us to go right over it
only thing i found was a bit of oil around the intercooler pipe where it joins onto the inlet manifold pulled of the intercooler and cleaned up the mess and he is coming back in a cpl of weeks to have a look again.
this prado looked and drove like it had 34000 ks not 340000.
i guess it all comes down to how cheap it is
also get it checked over first before parting with your money.
not just a quick look over get compresion test and tk(leaking head gasket)check as well as the usuall.
cheers

Priced at $33,000, so approx 10-12,000 below one with average kms.

Thanks for your input.

Hi Macca1

Something does not seem right. Sounds like a reps car with that amount of distance. Beware of the log book entries, sometimes the dealers fill in the service books when the car is traded. Cars that cover a long distance within a short period seldom have services done on time. Even if the vehicle was purchased new in January 2005 the service interval, for 5000Klm services, would be every 2.5 to 3 weeks. If the car was used nearly every day do you think the previous owner would spare the time to have it off the road for a day to have a service done. The asking price maybe a little high, but if it is in good condition my well be worth it.

Regards

My wife has a "reps" car and if they go more than 2000k's over service she get's busted. She does about 10k a month. That's about 240k over 2 years. Long runs mainly, she has a peice of crap falcon, but the ol' prado should handle that a little better.

Mine 1kz-te motor's nearly done 200,000 over 13 years and the only problem I have is that the rear main is leaking a little and the vacume pump is weaking power steering oil. That's prob got more to do with age than k's, so I reckon it's ok if everything checks out (compression test, head gasket etc).

I'm usually happy to buy a high mileage vehicle if it means you save a lot of $$.
Recently bought a 2002 Corolla Station Wagon with 160,000k because it was spotless, was a country car, dealer serviced, and cost $10,500 - insurance value is $14,700. As the vehicle ages, the high kilometres become irrelevant. And mechanically it won't be worse off for the long runs its had. Resale value may be an issue for you if you wanted to resell it soon. And vehicle over 200,000k are exempt from the statutary 3month warranty.

As said before the service interval for the 1KZ-FTE (3.0l EFI turbo diesel) motor IS 5000km, not 10,000km. Some services must have been missed as previously stated they would have been due every 2.5-3 weeks for it to do this mileage. The hilux version of this motor is reknowned for needing new bearings and crankshaft if oil changes are missed due to severe scratching on the contact surfaces.

Check its CV's to see if they are original or not.
At 340,000km I would start looking at diffs, tranny to make sure someone has not just bodged them up with low viscosity oils to make them quiet.
Injectors, Fuel pump????????

I would rather have long hot running over stop-start city stuff any day, but this mileage is bloody high. Personally If I could not be 100% sure that has been looked after I would give it a miss, its a bit of a risk.

CV's are cheap for that kind of saving, what's this crank bleep and bearing issue? I have not heard of it? Are you talking about the 3L motor, the 5L or the 1kz-te?

Saving, really????? It may be only two years old but how many proverbial years of work has it done?

I originally put 1KZ-FTE in the first post; whoopsie :)
I am talking about the 5L and 1KZ-TE motors, they have the same bottom end and as they are an old indirect injection unit they get very sooty very quickly hence 5000km service intervals. The carbon between the surfaces and slowly scratches the hell out of them, think of it as a grain of sand in your eye. The whole bottom end slowly becomes unbalanced and takes everything with it. This seems to only affect these engines as indirect injection diesels such as the 1HZ and TD42 have been abused far, far worse with little or no ill effects. I personally believe it has got something to do with the Exhaust Gas Recirculation dumping all the soot back in the oil, hence the quick build up of soot. The 1HZ and TD42 thankfully do not have this environmentalist imposed curse.

A work luxy had its 5L apart to replace the big end bearing and ended up having the whole lot (line bearings and c/shaft replaced) as they were like someone had attacked it with an angle grinder. I have heard of two 1KZ-TE prados that have had this problem, I dont know the cost to do the job but I would conservatively estimate atleast $6000 for a complete bottom end rebuild.
I do have a photo taken from 4wd Monthly in its guide to buying a used Rollux on this but I haven't been able to figure out how to put it up. The relevant issue is October 2006, Issue 97.

I bypassed my EGR yonks ago... took 2 seconds to do.

$6000 for a bottom end rebuild!! You can buy a new complete motor for nearly that much! LOL

Okay, I've made the decision to buy pending receipt of a satisfactory mechanical inspection, which I have organised today.

Having lived in country WA for the last 10 years, I rang a good friend/work colleague who lives in Merridin this morning. He new the vehicle and previous owner and his first words were "Michael is fastidious with his cars". My mate actually worked in the same building as the previous owner.

I then rang the previous owner who confirmed that the log books were genuine and that he did miss two services but given that made it about a 4 week interval rather than two I wasn't overly concerned. He said he had never 4 wheel drived it and that the only reason that he got rid of it was to update to the new model.

I drove the vehicle again and it drives great.

I must admit in normal circumstances I wouldn't buy a vehicle with these k's. I also got the price down to $32,500.

Thanks everyone for their input.

When you want to resell it its going to have 300000 plus ks on it and could be very hard to sell. I always go the other way low mileage but older cars , one owner if possible. Never had a dud in 35 years. Wife has a nh paj with 78000ks on it
Cheers pete
