Nope, not looking to go amphibious, just looking for suggestions of how to carry a small outboard on/in my Jackaroo to get from A to B.
I have recently aquired a 3m Zodiac that I plan to take on trips when I can't or don't want to tow the trailered boat. I like the idea of this as it allows me to be a bit more flexible on destination choice and still able to get out on the
water.
Anyway, the plan is to put the boat/floor etc. on the roof rack (weighs 38Kg all up but can be separated into parts), the fuel
tank can go up here as
well...but what to do with the outboard? The motor in question is an 8hp Yamaha, weighing in at 28Kg.
It could feasibly go on the roofrack with the boat, however it's a bit awkward to lift and I'm worried it might get damaged getting it up and down. Another consideration is that outboards are meant to be transported with the gearcase always lower than the powerhead. Rear cargo space is fairly limited due to dog/luggage etc. FYI.
At present I have a 6mm stainless plate fixed to my towbar tongue (see pic in gallery), thinking of mounting something to this, but not sure just yet of how to go about it. It's fixed with 2 x 1/2" U bolts.
Anyway, if anyone has any suggestions they think might work (or not work even), would love to here them.
Thanks
Gav

Other than that can get an outboard carrier for the rear. Like the swing away jerry can holders.

Are these readily available do you know? If so any idea where? I imagine I'd need to get a whole new rear bar...

If you can make space for the spare wheel somewhere else, then you can make a bracket for the outboard to fit on the spare wheel carrier. Rear cargo space may have to be compromised though.

I think Kaymar had one of these that utilise the existing bolts fort he spare tyre. Very similar to a high lift jack holder in its mounting on the wheel.

Sorry mate,
I just checked thier website and they actually dont. However if you are a bit of a handy man, check out thier website for the mounting system design and then adapt a piece of material roughly similar in size to the mounting position on your transom to affix the outboard to.
Let us know how you go if what you come up with. I'm very interested in hanging my 8hp Yamaha of the back wheel, but have yet to get around to it.
Cheers
Ben

Gav,
Why dont you make up something that will slide into your gooseneck and secure with the pin for the hitch. Have it hinged and on a gas strut so that it can lay down when you want to open the back door? Like a wheel carrier that folds down instead of outwards. Food for thought

Your not going to Gippsland are ya
Take the tow ball off, get some square tubing and make an upright bracket , say like a bike carrier and fix it to that, I remember back in 1963 my mate had an FC Holden
sedan and had the spare tyre on same idea, was a trend but it looked good to I had the FC Ute so that ruled it out for me, had the little white fluffy balls and wheel spats though, look in my profile pics in about 3 mins
