Met up with my mate today for a meal and a couple of quiet drinks. This fella is a couple of years younger than me, rather large and has a bush background. He's just finished five days dismantling tanks, pipe work etc in cold wet weather down here in the Village.
He walked into the pub and looked as pale as a ghost and not good.
How do convince a hard nut like this to take a holiday? He has his own business and is doing reasonably
well. However, the effect on his health is starting to become obvious.
I've thought about giving him a severe beating with a lump of wood, but I don't want take any control mechanisms away from his missus.
Any ideas?
Regards
Kim

I'd be more inclined to push him, forcibly if necessary, in the direction of his GP for a full check up first.

Al
It would take a few robust indivduals on this site to move him forcibly. You would have to give him a fair wack in the head before that happened.
It's not so much a health issue, but more a relaxation problem.

Kim

Kim,
Al is on the right track IMO. Regardless of him needing to relax etc, he needs to be looked at by a GP just to make sure all is Ok. This is also good advice for anyone taking up an exercise program especially if they haven't done so for a while.
In my time in the
ambulance service I saw a lot of folk suffer things like this and the resolution of the problem generally always started with a checkup by the doc first.
The stubborn side of your mate is entirely different however.
Good luck.

Instead of inviting him for a meal and drinks.... invite him for a bike ride or hike?

Don't know to me the Guy sound’s like he is a Fitter or similar, so his job is already quite physical, I think by the sounds of it, it’s his workload, and conditions he is working in and perhaps diet more than lack of physical activity, but Big can Fat or Big as in he's a solid build.
I am a Mechanical Fitter and I eat quite a bit, most of the time I eat reasonably healthy but would still have take out 2 times a week along with 3 cans of coke a day plus snacks, Apart from work I don’t really do any exercise but am still in good shape due to the work I do.
Thou do a 2-4 week stint of night shift’s 12hrs a night minimum, 6 nights a week and it’s takes a toll on you and buy the end of it you don't look to crash hot.
sounds like he need a good few days of relaxing.

Kimprado, I've seen your posts fairly often, and over a long period; and respect your comments: so pay yer $50 and become a member, so I can abuse you off-line.(Or did I not notice your
membership)?
Seriously though,it seems you're venting your frustration at being unable to help your mate, via the
forum:
Mate , first thing could be background. Ambo? Pig? Grunt?Fiery?Peace Keeper?GP? Farmer?Bee keeper? [Ozwasp could help there].
Fisherman? Timberman? Truckie?
Shees Kimp,if you're serious, get my address, arrange it all, and threaten his best-beloved non-living item with a severe beating if he doesn't get his Lady up here near
Bundaberg.
You asked: your move.
Jeff.

Hi Kimbo, long time no talk, I wish your mate could have been with me yesterday, I bumbed into one of my ex bosses, a great guy who always looked out for me ,hadn't seen him in yonks, he didn't look too
well he told me he walked out of the office at xmas and dropped down dead, they revived him on route to hospital and he died again before he got there, thankfully he recovered and has now taken stock of his health, no more stress, bad food, or long hours and he's still with us, and is he glad of that, wish your mate could read this, could save a lot of grief later,
best wishes,
Dave

Gidday Dave
Your pretty much on the mark. He's agreeded to join up with us for 4-5 days in the High Country when the tracks open up later this year.
I'm working on him to drop everything for a month or so and come up to the
Kimberley, west of
Litchfield in June 2008.

Kim

Kimprado,
I assume that you haven't broached the subject with your mate yet. As a good mate, i think you should comes straight out with whatever your feeling. At least this way if he doesn't take your advice and something happens, you won't be questioning yourself as to whether you could have helped.
Maybe mention your thoughts to his missus, she may be having the same thoughts as you.
Act now.
Macca

Yes I have for some time. I've also mentioned it to his missus on numerous occasions and she wants a break too. We'll see what happens.

Maybe try having some noisy drinks next time. They will probably be hard to find as quiet drinks are far more popular - in fact now that I think of it I can't remember the last time I heard anyone say they had a noisy drink.
