Have 100 series gxl. 2" lift. Have run 285/75r16 with true speedo reading (according to gps).Wanted to go narrower so I am currently running 255/85r16 in BFG mud terrains (done around 15000km), great width for traction and less punctures.Wanted to go a little taller ( bigger circumference). Would love to know of anyone who has fitted 255/100r16 (I think 9.00r16 is similar???) to a 100 series or similar ?? I know they are fitted to some cruiser utes. Is there any complications besides reduced power and braking ability?? (i only drive slow!!!) Current tyres are around 6% faster than speedo, and 255/100r16's would be around 9% faster than 285/75r16 on speedo. Also was looking for a tyre in a little more of a road and off-road tread pattern, rather than the noisy M/T. Have looked at the Michellin XZL in 255/100r16. I do travel on harsh gravel roads and carry heavy loads and tow heavy trailers. Would appreciate all comments and opinions on this topic.
Kind regards,
Kirsten NSW

Hi Kirsten,

You may want to look at the insurance and registration ramifications before altering your car from factory standards.

If your radically changing tyre sizes all your ratios are out of wack so you should change the diff ratios to suit.Do your home work mate.this may start you on your voyage!

I've gone as big as a 9/34 (american terminolagy)
Diameter is 34.2 inches. This was on a Land Rover.
(I also run 255/85/16 BFG Muds as a daily driver.)

It worked Ok and gave me what I was looking for. (This was in a mud traction tyre)

However all your ratios are out and any bigger and you get into real problems with touching body work and other things. ie rubbing on radius arms when in full lock, rubbing on body when at full ariticulation etc etc.

This can be a can of worms and unless you're prepared to do it properly which can mean substantial modifications don't do it.

All this is apart from the legal and insurance aspect mentioned above.

Bottom line is, anything is possible you just have to be prepared to throw the required amount of time and money at it.

255/85/16 are 33" the 9/34 are just over 34"
They are only one inch but you do notice it.
The difference seems to be expotentially incremental as you go up.

Why not try to borrow some, fit them and see. Might cost you fitting charges but you'll know.

Thanks for that. Just the kind of real world comparison I was looking for.

Don't want to hijack here, but just as an aside, what were the 285 BFG M/T's like on the 100 Series? I am just about to buy a set. How noisy are they really? Is it intrusive and irritating?

Any other BFG MT input appreciated.

Cheers

not hijacking at all. I actually ran Cooper ATR in 285/75r16's and although I got 65000km out of them , they were significantly chipped from gravel roads and with still about 50% of the tread left, i lost the two rear's withcracks around the bead and they both completely failed. Cooper's rep said from towing heavy trailers (too much flexing with width), which I do. Good tyre on tar roads, but not for gravel. They chip too easily (IMHO too hard a compound.) . I did find that the 285's gave a slightly " ship type" ride, meaning the car swayed around a lot more, hence this is gone now I have gone back to 255's. Now the car rides so much better, and also with the longer footprint. Mud terrains in my opinion are noisier, but only notice when window is down driving through town. They were extremely noisy at first, however now with 15000km's on them they have quitened down significantly. Very happy with the wear rate so far. We run BFG M/T 265/75r16 on RV cruiser ute and get great mileage out of them (60-70000km), considering the roads we travel. Another cruiser ute runs Cooper tyres (has had both ST-C and STT), and hasn't got anywhere near the same wear ( I think his right foot might be heavier though).BFG M/T would be my choice for off- road tyres as they wear well and don't chip as easily. The noise is noticeable at first, but does fade and is certainly not irritating. You may also encounter a slight increase in fuel consumption by, 1. going wider and 2. switching to M/T pattern. We run ours on about 70% tar ,30% gravel (very coarse & cutting) and they wear pretty well. Great tyres IMO , I'd just be thinking about the width though. Wider tyres have a tendency of getting more punctures due to the wider surface area and picking up more objects. For a better ride 265/75r16 would suit however rolling diameter is less therefore speedo slightly out. I found with 285's my speedo ran almost true to gps. I love the ride of the 255/85r16's, but they only come in BFG M/T or Cooper ST. I wouldn't have the latter as they chip. This is just my opinion and thoughts . Hope it is of value to you.
Keep it real!!
Regards Kirsten

keepingitreal,
Thanks for your thoughts on the 255/85. I've got an 8 and am tossing up b/w the 285s and 255s. Will probably go to the 255 bighorns. Thanks for your thoughts
