Sim
I have a 2002 4.8 Patrol on gas. I have blown 3 cats, 2 sets of oxy sensors and now cooked all the exhaust valves. Total cost must be close to 10K. The car has done 200K Kms and generally has been fantastic accept for these problems.
Anyone else finding similar ?
I am not sure if the history, ie, blown cats etc should have allerted my mechanics to this, or if it is a tuning issue like too lean, too rich etc.
Also, for the last two years I have been complaining of poor performance but was told I had just got used to it. What a lot of crap ! If you are experiencing this, get your valves checked before it gets expensive.
Cheers, Sim.

who is doing the work?? A proper LPG place, a new fitter who has jumped on board since the new rebate to cash in, or just the local spanner man?

Gidday Truckster, It's the Nissan Dealer I bought it from new. They did the LPG install and every service. The install was done when I bought it 5 years ago,
well before all the rebates etc.
Cheers mate.

Hi Sim,
I'm no expert on the subject. Sounds like all the items you have mentioned are on the exhasust side of the motor. For whaterver reason, sounds like you exhast gasses are to hot.
Could be as simple as mix rations - I think they usually test this with a sensor up the exhaust pipe while tuning.
Paul.

I tend to agree. Years ago when I installed my own gear (rememeber those days?) the supplier of the gear told me not to too jewish with the mixtures as I will end up with burnt out exhaust valves. No cats to worry about when I did
mine.

Sim I do sympathise with you and hope that you find a solution. Got to take you to task over your brand loyalty though - how can you describe a vehicle that has given 2 years of poor performance followed by serious problems and a $10K repair bill as fantastic? You can expect 200K km troublefree from today's vehicles. Your experience as you describe it is a disgraceful performance by the vehicle and the service from its agents. You should be contacting Nissan's service and customer relations departments immediately.

Read rawill's posts Truck. Nissan dealer did the work so I repeat, back to Nissan. Mind you I wish you luck as I've seen a number of posts which suggest that Nissan service is as poor as their vehicles and rawill's experience would seem to bear this out. I have no personal experience with their product or service and am not likely to in the future so I'm just going on what I hear from others. Frankly I think most people I know who have bought them have been heavily influenced by the price. Not a saving in the long run though!

That would be DEALER fitted, not Nissan.. so Nissan wouldnt give a toss.. Your arguement would be with the dealer, and .. car dealers and care factor with clients?

The dealer is an agent of the manufacturer and has responsibilities by law. They will try to avoid meeting those responsibilities Truck and it sounds as though you just haven't been forceful enough in your dealings with them. Car dealers - new or used - will get away with whatever they can - they love "wood ducks!!" Put your foot down with a firm hand in future Truck.
Meanwhile rawill keep at them - sorry I got side tracked advising Truck.

Hi Sim
Sad story to here - but its not first time I've heard it.
Made the decision here to keep my 2002 4800 trim and stay with petrol
and I've been able to keep its long term fuel use to 16.5 lt/100km which is
tolerable.
"Lack of power get used to it" , what a statement I can imagine your concern
as performance is the reason to own these cars.
I have also heard good story as
well so it seems to be in the quality of the setup.
I regularly monitor performance of my car , and any deviation is cause for concern.
Is yours an auto - they have extra cat sensors and are tricker - my manual does not have these.
When I did consider gas , my auto enginner brother who is
well into this stuff advised the extra precaution of a seperate valve saver lube injection add on kit.
I guess you can't have your time over , but 10k extra certainly upsets the economy savings and it might be better to go back to petrol as per couple of others have done.
I have also made a little computer Oxy sensor monitor which sits on my car and it displays lean/rich etc. Mines a little complex - but you can get simpler after market kits.
You don't actually need the two oxy sensors - so if having problems in this area you can remove one and plug the hole, and wire the output of one into both ecu inputs, mines permanently this way. I sometimes use a Unichip which is great for gas , and they work by cutting and cross wiring the two senors.

Hi All, Thanks for your replys,
I should clarify that the $10K is an estimate including the warranty repairs, and based on the cost out of warranty which is probably $6K so far.
The car is great as far as off road capability, and drives like a sports car on the road. I'm very happy with that, but must admit that if I trade it, the D3 SE looks good. I wouldn't go with the gas again on a 4WD.
Cheers, Sim.

Hi Sim
Have friend with 80 series who also couldn't get his right , and converted it back to petrol only and is happy.
Always in search for better car here , and took D3 diesel for a spin two weeks ago.
Interesting car and it has adequate performance for 4wding. Wasn't impressed with what I consider poor quality plastics which included the headlights , exhaust under the axle worried me as did vague feeling of the air
suspension - still worth considering.
