Hi Guys, I need some assistance in choosing my next vehicle. My wife is sick of the topic so I turn to you guys to hear me out.
I currently drive a 95 triton dual cab 4wd. I have a lot of fun 4wd'ing in it and the tub has made camping trips a lot easier compared to stacking the back of the xtrail. I am not really sure having a tub is my main criteria anymore. Having used it only a handful of times carting rubbish to the tip and taking the dogs to the beach, I cant think of any other reasons for it (by the way I am not a tradesman and most of my driving will be heading into town for the next 12 months).
What i want for my next vehicle is to be comfortable driving into town. I will avg around 150kms per day. I need it to be somewhat economical, but having said that I am used to paying for fuel as my daily driver for the past 5 yrs until recently was a wrx. I need to fit 2 baby seats in the car. Ultimately, I want the best of both worlds i) Comfortable cruiser ii) really good off road.
I have made choosing the car a little easier by narrowing it down to 2 vehicles. Triton GLX-R (turbo deisel manual)
Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon (manual)
Problem is I want the best of both of them. Ultimately it will be my choice and I need to decide if i really need a tub/ute, but i thought their might be others who have been in the same boat looking for a recreational/daily driver vehicle.

Mate,

I'm in the same boat, I just haven't found the right Vehicle yet. We have the X Trail for SWMBO and my Triton which is going to be upgraded.
I am leaning towards a GXL Auto Diesel Cruiser in the 2000 - 2003 vintage. I also need to fit the 2 child seats in.

I have a mate that bought the last of the old shape Triton GLX-R TD after his first kid and is finding it go for what he needs. Commutes about 100km a day.
You may want to check out what aftermarket accessories are available before you buy as you may be shocked at what is available.

Good Luck

Cheers Kev

Look at the Prado GXL in the new D4D diesel.

Doing 150km a day would make me very tired of filling up all the time. Prado takes 180l (twin 90l tanks) and with the newer common rail diesel will do easy 1300km between fills. Mate just bought one and it did near 800km on first tank!

Would have more room in back than a Rubicon I would think. MUCH more comfortable to be in for 2 hours a day. With a suspension/tyre upgrade they are quite good off-road. Very reliable vehicle (though D4D is a new motor so can't speak about reliability of the motor).

Very happy with my Prado (even though only has the less powerful older 1KZ-TE diesel).

Pfttt. you're being a bit conservative there mate.

Had my D4D Auto GXL Prado since Mar 07. Only done city driving. Up to 9,000km now.

Since the 5,000km mark, fuel consumption has stayed steady at 9.43L / 100km. That's with BullBar and Rhino Cross-Racks x 2. That gives me a range of 1,900km... in the city!!!!

Can't wait for Dec - Mar fishing trips to really test it out on the open road.

To the original poster. I loving call the duel cab utes as having "Suicide Seats". Sit in the back for 2 hours and tell me how your back goes. The angle of the seats keeps the chiro's in business.

Not sure how long you're planing to keep this, but with kids in the back, when they outgrow the child seats...

All I can give you is my scenario. Bought a Kia Sorrento new a few years ago and regretted every day of it. I was stuck to keeping it for 10 years and was really down about it cause I went the "cheap" option.

Won a size full of money, sold the Kia and a corolla and bought 2 x new cars, one being the Prado. You may well say, I got the cars for nothing. That's true, but I could have halved the mortgage as well.

Note: Long after you've forgotten the price, you'll still be stuck with your decision.

Old 96kw motor vs the D4D are worlds apart. It's vast.

Sorry for waffling on a bit. I'd beg, borrow and steal to get the D4D Prado. I know I'm set for 10 years in mine. Good enough to bring my (1st child) Prem Baby home in (a 23 weeker) in 2 weeks time. And good enough to cart her and her friends to school in. Good enough to take family and friends out in comfort. Good enough to do my fishing in and get away from the madhouse of the city.

Thanks guys... KevM - youre in exactly the same boat, even driving the same cars. WEIRD!!!
I forgot to mention the car needs to be brand new. I need to keep the price (including on roads) at 50k or below.
I just had a look at the Prado's price range and I really do like em but I could only afford to get something thats already 1-2 yrs old which doesnt have the new D4D motor.
Another spanner to throw into the works is that being a company car I will be paying FBT ($5k) unless it has a genuine 1 tonne payload as commericals are excl. from paying FBT. I dont want this to be the reason for choosing a vehicle but its lingering in the back of my mind.

If Jeep offered the Unlimited Rubicon in TD I think I'd know what to get next.

Ahhhhh the ol' FBT limit

Yes - My Prado is Novated Lease. Just when you get onto a good thing the govt comes up with another way to screw it up.

Absoluutely nothing wrong with the motor in a 2 year old prado, or the rest of the vehicle for that matter.
So if you are going down that path, a 2 year old pajero would also suit your needs.
Both good on fuel mileage, but pajero only has single fuel tank.
Otherwise i think you are stuck with a choice of dual cab utes, and I think any of them in TD would be economical to drive everyday.
Cant say im a fan of the yanky truck.

Cheers Pesty

I dont know or have read any comments from anyone that owns the new Jeep. I have read lots of reviews and the only thing common in all write-ups is its offroad ability. It terms of styling for the Jeep. I think its like the Triton... you either like em or hate em.

Does anyone have fuel consumption figures for the TD Triton?

I was thinking of buying a 1 ton dual cab, as I was under the impression they were "zero substantiation" for tax purposes because of the 1 ton payload.

So a quick call to the accountant to verify, and was told the tax dep't has just changed the classifications - dual cabs are no longer "zero substantiation" vehicles. That probably means that whichever way you buy/lease/rent them, the rule has changed for FBT, etc.

Is this what you are driving now ? Lol . You could do worse. Pick a certain Nissan model in the 3 litre capacity range and try that. Regards G.T.

Hi Frank if you want the latest review of current model utes go and buy yourself the latest 4wd monthly. They did a full test out on them but thats if you decide to go the ute. I recently just sold my hilux and bought a 95 series prado (old shape). Do I miss the ute ?? yes for putting my Rottie and Shepard in. They now slobber over the rear windows of the prado. I havnt taken off road nor loaded it wright up like I use to the old lux as we now pack everything in the camper trailer (except the dogs). The main thing I havnt worked out yet with the prado is water tank. I use to have a 165L tank in the old lux and was great but will be limited with the prado. I imagine the new utes are a lot better to ride in then the old lux leaf spring front and back. Dont buy a V6 petrol prado if your after economy 15L plus around town 12+ on the open road. Thats my model anyway definately go the diesel. Most of the current model diesels seem to be averaging around the 10L per 100 mark either in ute or Sedan style. Either way with that price range you have a good choice of vehicle. I dont regret not having the ute. I think now days the utes are just as comfortable as the prado, patrols, cruisers etc. Good luck on what ever you choose. Regards Steve M

Hello frankl, Easy! Only 2 vehicles to consider: TD Prado or Cruiser. Anything else is second best.
