Hi,
I have a 3 way fridge and would like to run off gas. Unfortunately to start the gas I have to create a spark which I have been told comes from your car (via the various connections which my car wiring does not seem to have).

The fridge has a merrit plug and I was wandering if I could plug this into a power pack to create the spark.

The problem is the power pack has only cigarette type plugs so I was wandering if there is an adaptor or something to help me, if so where do I get one

ie female merrit and male cigarette lighter

Thanks,
Richard

Hi Richard

Places like Jaycar sell both, and also sell a cig lighter plug with a small red adaptor on it such that it can plug into Merit socket or cig lighter socket.

Jaycar part PP-2094 $5.50

Waeco fridges use same type thing.

My Chescold 3-way has a PiezoIgniter - it has no need for any 12 volts.

Hi Oldman

All 3 way fridges I have seen to date have ignited with a match (really really old), flint (old) or Peizo ignition (the same as used to light bbq's). This may be a crazy thought but why would anyone build a gas fridge that has to have electricity connected to it to start.!! I am pretty sure you would find your fridge does not require connection to an external electricity source in order to ignite. However with that said they are sometimes tricky to get started and some patience is needed till you get the knack. Grab your manual. It should tell you exactly what procedure to follow.

Kc - It is not mentioned in the doco - it an Electrolux (not sure of the model) as provided in a Cub camper

I got these instructions from Cub themselves.

What I need is some power to ignite the gas, once lit it will run OK.

Kc

It sounds like this is one of the newer models that selects the best power source. If the 240 V supply fails and the gas supply is available then the control circuitry will light the gas. When the 240 V returns then it will switch off the gas and return to 240 V.

If Richard can supply the model number we can confirm this.

Hi - just an update.

Went to Jay-Car and bought a
. Merrit plug (feamle)
. Cigarette plug (male)
. Cable

Got them solded up and and plugged the fridge in to the merrit plug and the cigarette plug into my power pack and turned on the gas and I saw sparks (what I am supposed to see) and the gas started.

I can't tell if running unless I leave it and see if goes cold but I believe I could hear the flame brning so reckon it was working.

So you do need the power to start this thing after all.
