Travelled the GCR in late May heading West from Ayers Rock. The first 200 km to Docker River is still at its appalling worst. What's interesting to note is the deterioration of the Kaltukatjara Campground a few km past Docker River. Tho managed by the local Anangu Corporation, nothing has been done to maintain the facility. The shower no longer works and no water is available at any of the taps thus rendering the toilets inoperable as well. The pump and bore are kaput. Several of the septic systems associated with the toilets have been driven over by locals in their vehicles and collapsed so be careful if wandering about. The fire rings have not been cleaned out at any stage and are full to overflowing with ash and rubbish making it near impossible to light a fire unless your prepared to shovel out a good deal of rubbish first. View is still memorable tho. (Viewing platform is close to toppling though as sand has eroded from supports. Spoke to the Manager at Docker River as he came about the site and bought those things to his attention. Has a hard time getting the locals to put in. Do not know if anything will have changed in the preceding month. A shame is it was a pleasant place to camp 12 months ago. Be warned. No water and no facilities.

Has anybody been thru since 30th May 07? Have any of the problems been fixed? Cheers. Mick.

I am heading through that way on 19/7/07, will update then if no one does it before me. What were the road conditions etc like further on, eg. Kultukatjara to Laverton?

Regards,
John

John, the road improves once you cross the borderinto W.A. I went down a further 100 km from Docker and then turned off south down to Wingelina for Surveyor Generals Corner. Road was in good nick. Also very good between Warburton and the Tjukayirla Roadhouse. I turned off 15 km past that and headed north on the David Carnegie. Passed quite a few 2 wheel drives towing vans along it so no challenges.

Hope that helps. Cheers. Mick.
