Heefers
G'day to all,
Am about to set up extended diff and gearbox breathers on my Hilux. Have read the archives and there was a warning about using hose with too smaller inner diameter as the diff would not be able to suck air through the long lengths of breather hose easily enough when cooling. Problem is no-one stated what is too small. I have a good length of 6.5mm ID fuel hose earmarked for the job, will this be big enough for the task at hand? My feelings are that this will be plenty big enough but just wanted some reassurance that I'm on the right track.
Cheers, Heefers

Whats currently in place? I measured
mine (Patrol) and got some red fuel hose that was the same ID and OD that way I could use the OE clamps. While your at it do the breathers on the gearbox and transfer case as
well if they look like they can ingest
water.
Regards
David

Thanks Grungle, It currently has a short stem with a cap on the end coming off both diffs, gearbox and transfer, I think they may be called a poppet valve but not sure. The problem is that they look like they will get caked with mud and the like and eventually seal themselves off. Do you remember the ID of the hose you used?

Your 1/4 inch hose is fine - its the same as whats on there. Throw the valve away - they are one way - they let air out, but stop it coming back, so increase the chances of
water being sucked past seals. Most people put a cheap fuel filter on the end, so its open to air.

Hi Heefers,
try this site, then click on 'BODY' and look for diff breathers. It has a list of items you need and pics on how to do it
www.toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/index.htm
or
www.wattora.com/
then open up tech/mods - diff breathers
Hope this helps

Thanks Guys,
The first link was pretty much on the money for what I had planned (except for ending the breather inside the cabin, that's gotta smell a bit funky now and then). Anyway, thank you again for your replies.
Cheers, Heefers
