I am looking to take a spare Inner Tube as a backup on a trip I am taking soon, I need to know if I can use the same size tube on a 265/65/17" wheel (Car) and a 31/10.5/15" wheel (Caravan).
Many thanks in advance.

There's a bit of a clue in the tyre size, one wheel has is 17" diameter rim and the has a 15" diameter

There is only 5% difference in outside diameter, but 2" difference inside, are tubes that expensive that you can't buy 2?

I am with you Shaker. Buy one of each. That isn't super smart and smarmy at all. It's common sense not to over stretech or deeply crease.

It wasn't meant to be smart & certainly isn't within the definition of smarmy.
I also might add, that I took the trouble to Google up the outside diameter difference for you.
If you were talking about carrying 2 extra wheels I could have understood the dilemma ...... but 2 tubes?

Mate,
I'd use the 17" in both, I'd jam any tube in any tyre in an emergency and see how it goes.

Only rider I'd put on it is in the 15" tyre it'll have folds and buckles in it that cause weak points so tow slow and fix properly fast.

Our trail bikes have 21" front wheels and 18" rear, we carry only a 21" tube and use it for both as an emergency bush fix.

If you've got the choice, then the right tube for the right job is safest.

Geoff,

I'd be interested to try that. I'm just wondering whether the valve would pull in as you inflated the tyre. I guess my concern would be that the quality of tubes these days is crap, and they may not take to being expanded an extra 2 inches. Off to Warraweena after I finish my coffee!
Cheers

Hi EErfree

Not all tube sizes are available now and its ok to use a different size within reason.

In going thru this recently I ended up with a 235/85/16 tube which is reccomended for all tyre sizes from 7.50/16 up to 285/75/16.

Its also important to specify the right valve stem type. In my case my various aftermarket rims are all meant for normal radial AT tyres and hence use a valve type called TR13.

So correct specification from Goodyear place for tube is 235/85/16 TR13 cost $25

Hi Robin
That's interesting. Been trying to get a tube as an emergency backup for tubeless Dunlop Grandtrek 265/65R17 AT20. Have been told no such tube available for a 17" and will have to try a 16". Various tyre stores were hesitant to give me any info ona 16" tube.
Have also been told that if the tube folds or creases it will fail very quickly if not straight away.
I will investigate the 235/85/16 TR13.
Thanks
PeteS

Hi PeteS

Haven't heard that about folds etc, its certainly less than ideal , but that implies wear , which comes from movement and an expanded tube under pressure doesn't move much in tyre.

Its worth the effort to put tube into an old carcass off the rim and watch how it fills it.

Solved more than one problem with tube , apart from keeping kids happy in swimming holes , remember one night , bit like to-day in melbourne , wet cold miserable and at 2am in the mud we rolled a tyre off rim and couldn't re-seat it with air available , we were winning and determined not to lose place so fitted tube and this re-seated tyre bead quite nicely forcing about a kilo of mud out of tyre in process.

Thank you for your logical answer to a simple question, I will ( in light of some responses I received) think twice about asking anymore questions.
Thank You

sorry if my reply came across as half smart/smarmy but some forum posters do not know what 31 10.5r 15 means, don't be put off asking Questions on this excellent forum.
If you think that some of the replys you got where a bit harsh,SO BE IT,personally I wouldn't stuff around fitting an odd size tube in a tyre (there's plenty out there have enough trouble with tubes that are the right size)just spend the $25 and not WORRY about it!

No worries use 15inch for both. Tube will stretch over 17inch wheel no problems, but 17inch will crease in 15inch centre. Tube will stretch but will not shrink. Some of the tubes are now marked in both 15 & 16inch sizes on same tube, Overall od is similar.

My apology submitted.
My retort was unwarranted, I will in future think more deeply before I post as I now realise that that question was at the least naive if not stupid.
But as they say "any question is a good question" and it made at least one person (Me) think about what we post so all is good.
Cheers
