I wonder if you blokes who have been "around the traps" for a while could advise me how far I should expect to travel on a
tank of fuel. I don't think it's one of those HUGE tanks but it's not a really small one either. I think it would be fair to say it's an average size. Sometimes when I fill it it takes about $50 but other times I can only get $20 into it so I really am a bit confused. You might have guessed that "in a manner of speaking" mathematics is not my "strong subject". Anyhow, how big it is doesn't matter so much because the "bottom line" is how far it will go. I'm sort of planning for "the big one". I haven't quite got down to counting "how many sleeps" but it will be happening "in the near future". I just don't want to run out of fuel in some "out of the way place", that's why I'm asking for help from people who have "been there and done that".

Maaaaaaaaaaate!
If you happened to mention what type of 4WD you are driving (if you have one at all) then the learned folk here could probably help you.
Otherwise stop wasting everybodys time eh?

No "Muddy doe" I don't have a four wheel drive - just a car. A car is OK to do "the big one" isn't it? Lots of people seem to go around Australia in cars. What is a "Playdoe GXL"? I've been "wracking my brains" but can't "put my finger on it". It certainly looks like you have fun in mud! Still "boys will be boys". I remember as a boy I used to ride my pushbike through puddles and I thought it was great fun so I know the thrills you must have had when your photograph was taken.

Hey there Muddy - how are you and Jude doing?
I wonder how Aandy's trailer is going - perhaps he took a leaf spring out of his own book in the Simpson.
Do a search for "Aandy" in the archives here ... he's clearly been popping his head in for longer than I have been in long pants.
Perhaps it is someone we know better acting out his alter ego.
Cheers
Andrew who is sure he mispelt alter ;-)

and how come he gets his name capitalised and highlighted?
If don't think if I put "Andrew from Vivid Adventures" in quotes it gets the treatment, but "Aandy" does.
Lucky boy - maybe he David's boatie friend, or an auto-bot David invented that puts out a spurious post just to check everything is working on his sight.

Based on what you said, I would estimate you would get about 300 kms out of a
tank, give or take a couple of hundred ks I should know, I've got one too....
....hmmmm... what it we were all just brains in jars on a shelf thinking that life was happening.....hmmmmm

Aaaaannnnndddddyyyyy
Do what you recommended a week or so ago you
hill billy,
Look at your speedo and run it out of fuel. Then you will learn how much fuel is in the
tank, (obviuosly not enough)
But the best part is you will learn how to reprime it your self.
Go work it out yourself.

mmmm I've helped people who wanted to know how big their tent pegs should be, which 4wd to buy, whether their van should have aircon or not, how long a battery will last, what cooker to buy etc. etc. so I thought it was my turn to find out how far I can go on a
tank of fuel. While I'm on here maybe someone could tell me if I should take thermal T shirts with me on "the big one". When I'm in the southern areas it will be cold, but much of Australia will be warm. So my problem is whether it will be cold enough for thermals and will the benefit of them in cold areas outweigh the inconvenience of storing them when I'm in warm areas. I would really appreciate the help of people who have experienced these conditions because I don't want to make a poor decision on such an important matter.

Hi Aandy
It seems as though no one is taking you seriously in what seems to be a legitimate question.
The problem seems to relate in what type of vehicle, and what size fuel
tank you have (or are getting)
I have done this trip twice in the last 5 years, and I noticed that I got 11k/l with the round shaped
tank, but only got 7k/l with the square shaped tanks.
The best tanks are the ones from Super Cheap because thay have rounded corners, and this helps swirl the fuel anti-clockwise, which allows the fuel to vaporise faster, especially around the "top end"
The volume of the tanks can be derermined by tapping them with a stick.
If the sound echoes for 5 seconds, it's 50 litres, if the echo is 8 seconds, it's 70 litres, and if it doesn't echo, it's a duck.
If you do run out of fuel, just add
water to the
tank, add 5 aspros, and red cordial to make petrol, or boot polish for diesel.
It's really that simple, mate. Have a safe trip.

For premium petrol do we use high shine boot polish and full strength cordial?
Is Bio diesel made from low jule cordial?

C'mon barry, use some common sense. Black polish for BP,
Caltex etc, and brown polish for generic brands. PS aspros have to be the fizzy soluble ot they'll block the filter,
and
Kev, If you want Bio diesel you gotta add some bio's (available from Bunnings gardening section in 2kg packets) , high shine polish will obviously glaze the cylinders, and low jule cordial,? sorry, I don't know Jule, how tall she is, or what cordial she drinks.

With the Bio's is it 2kg for a big
tank with rounded edges or 2kg for a small
tank with square sides?
Thanks
Kev
P.S Jule is about 6'2" and very blonde with long legs

Well from my experience I have found the "huge roads" are better suited to the "huge tanks", so if you keep to the "average type" roads (not the "small ones", as you don't have a "4wd") then you'll get the "optimum fuel economy". I don't know exactly how much that would be, it wouldn't be "huge", and deffinatally not "small", but it'd be about "normal". Hope that helps on the "big one".

Aandy, despite the
well intentioned efforts of many people on this site, I don't think you've been given a good enough answer.
Unfortunately, I don't know either - so I suggest you fill about 8 jerry cans and carry them on your back
seat. On second thoughts, get a roof rack and carry another 15 or so up there as
well.
Sounds like a great trip you're planning. We're all jealous.

My fuel economy or lack of depends on the amount of lead in the equation. Especially the lead in my right foot.
