At the 4WD show at Wandin a bloke was selling reasonably cheaply the bloody big socket required to do the wheel bearings on the Landcruiser. Should have bought one at the time. Does anyone know where I can get one at a reasonable price?
Thanks
Michael

You can buy direct from Toyota, but I wouldn't think it would be a reasonable price. I think from memory it is a 3/4 or 1" drive, so need suitable adapter as well.

If you are handy with metalwork it is not hard to make a suitable socket.
I shopped around for it for a while but found nothing that could justify the price asked for my very occasional use. The best hint I had was to shop at a rural supply place for a box spanner which apparently are cheaper than sockets but there was no such place near my location.
The socket I made in my shed works just fine.

That's what I did.

I had a spare nut and some steel bar about 4cm by 6mm or there abouts.

I clamped the nut in the vice with the metal bar and folded the metal around the nut. Had to reposition it all a couple of times and it took a bit of careful tapping with a heavyish hammer but I managed to get things lined up. I welded the seam and trimmed the end on the grinder. I then welded a length of box section stell onto the hex I had made. More flat bar across the top of that and a 19mm nut on that.

I put a 19mm socket on my torque wrench and use that to adjust the wheel bearing nut to the specified torque.

I had an entertaining afternoon in the shed and saved about $50.00. That's a win win win. And I win again wvery time I use it.

Hi Dave
What size drive do you need?. I have half inch. If i was going to bother with one i'd like to be able to use my torque wrench on it.
Cheers Lyndon

Lyndon, mine is 1/2 inch drive.
I have one in my workshop in which I bought from my tool man. All I need now is to replace my home made one for the Patrols.

You can do without a socket anyway. A common bladed screwdriver or punch and a hammer will do the trick.

Certainly best to have a socket but not a necessity.

I bought mine, and the three pronged thingo, way back in 1988 when I owned a Troopie.

I kept them kicking around the workshop because I am a hoarder and guess what !!??

Now I've got a 2007 Landcruiser Cab Chassis and they are a current item once more.

Ain't Toyota just wunnerful? Having such foresight !!
I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Hi guys,
54 mm socket .... sure 54? ....... got a slotter, can make them up, piece of cake.
Will reduce from 54 internal to .... let said .... well any external hex size you like.
How much ? bring a bottle scotch (the cheapy one) and I'm happy.

How about other big socket sizes?

I have an engineering workshop in Maddington and if I can be in any help, email me
