G'day all
Has anyone travelled the route from cania gorge to kroombit tops recently, I beleive it takes you through private property and the cania gorge caravan
park can supply a map and directions. I'm interested to hear about the condition of the track and any particular spots to watch out for, I've heard it can be slow going.
I would appreciate any input
Thanks
Jon

Hi Jon.. this is a track I shall be doing in the next few months.
A couple of years ago I went in from the coast side to see the plane wreck up there. Did it in a Holden Cruze. An amazing drive. However the 2 wd road up to the
lookout was very rough.. would not like to do it in a conventional car.
The track up from the Biloela side is through private property and the locals tell me it is now closed off. But a call to the Forestry office at
Gladstone told me that it is a not too hard 4wd track that can be a day trip up and back from Cania Gorge. We're taking the Disco up there in October. If you go before then would love to hear your comments re track condition. If you Google Kroombit Tops you will find mention of this track on the Moto Shire Council web site. (I think I've got that right!) It is very much a dry weather road only.
Cheers

Jon,
We did this track before
easter this year. It's a slow drive, bit rough in
places but worth doing. We went out to the bomber
crash site then went down a track called the stairs or something similar, that is a low range, quite steep and rocky, also worth doing. We stayed at the Top Tourist
park and bought maps/info from the office there for @ $5.00. I enjoyed it. It took my family nearly all day from the caravan
park to Kroobit
lookout, Bomber
crash site and the other loop track and return to the caravan
park.

Drew.. how rough was the road in? I guess on a 1 - 4 scale? We're taking our Disco 3 in and a mate with a Jeep Grand Cherokee is coming as
well.
Many thanks
Cheers

Mark,
It's not really a drama, just a fairly rocky in
places, later that day after we got back I found a rear tyre with a tread block coming off. Probably a combo of high tyre pressure and older tyres. I was hoping to 10000 more km's out of them. Too bad hey. It's a good trip, especially the bomber.

jon p qld,
Have been up to the old gold fields at Monal and was told that the road continued on to Cania Gorge.
Went up from Gladstone/Ubobo/Cedarvale property/Monal and return.
The road up the range was steep but fairly easy. Checked out the remains at Monal as ancestors were miners there. Obtained permission from Cedarvale first.
I think this is another way to get to Cania from Kroombit Tops.
Cheers,
Bros.

Just did this a couple of weeks ago in a Rav4. 4wd not necessary anywhere between Cania and Kroombit Tops, although that would change after heavy rain. Took a little over two hours. About half the distance is "farm track" standard and 30 - 40 km/hr. About 6 gates to open and close on way.
Monto Shire web page has a link to a very good shire map showing ALL shire roads (pdf file). Sadly, Kroombit Tops straddles the
boundary between Banana, Calliope and
Monto Shires, and the other shires don't have maps of similar standard.

The link below is to a map site which is pretty good, but doesn't show all roads, or their names. Scroll SSW to find Kroombit Tops.

As you will find, there is a return road you can take via the "
United Rise Mine" site (Monal Gold fields), back to Mungungo and
Monto. I have travelled this route from Mungungo to the
mine and back, not from Kroombit to the
mine. The road was good, though loose gravel. 4wd not necessary, but reassuring to have. Just south of the old
mine site, and not shown on the map is "Raspberry
Creek Road" which cuts across to "Dooloo Tops Road". Very narrow, but good
views - 4wd for peace of mind.
