Hi

Can anyone give me any information on the Ford Ranger?

I am looking at buying a new 4wd ute and the other day was talked into taking the Ford Ranger for a drive. I am not a Ford man and my arm had to be twisted.

I hate to say it but my wife and I were very impressed. Very comfortable, smooth, quite and seemed to have plenty of power.

I have since taken a Hilux SR5 x-cab to compare it with the Ranger and have to say the Ford appears to be the much better option. I have read in the Forum about the "shudder" in the Hilux and this was noticeable to both me and the wife.

All of the above driving was done on suburban roads and then onto the freeway. None was off road and perhaps this is were the big difference may be.

I had made my mind up to buy a Hilux but after this I am not too sure. I hope to take a Rodeo, Mazda and Navarra for a run next week to get other comparisons.

I know a lot of it is personal preference but I would be interested to hear any comments and recommendations.

The latest 4x4 Monthly mag did a test and there's a DVD too. Mazda / Ford came out tops.

Rodeo parts and servicing is terrible and way above other brands. Suggest you look at Mitsi Triton 3.2L as it has much to offer and great warranty 5 yrs and 10yr transmission. If you are looking to tow the Triton has the best gear ratios. Did extensive research prior to ordering and drove all and spoke to fleet managers. We are delighted with the Triton and especially the low fuel consumption.
Mazda is basically identical to Ford. I did not want to be first adoptee of new engine. Front end of Ford and Mazda is known to be not strong and old style torsion bar.

"ok so we thought we were luckey and hoped it didnt do any internal damage. so we timed it put it all back together and hoped it started."

inspiring words from what I assume is a dealer mechanic!!

If thats a sign of there build quality I will pass and I prefer to drive my cars rather than have them sit in a work shop.
What happens when the warranty runs out?

A problem such as this would show before 100,000km's or 3 years, and if it is in fact as bad as the post says it is, it will be a recall item very shortly.

No make or module is above problems, from all accounts the Ranger/BT50 engine is a very good motor even the 4WD monthly guys admitted that and normally all they do is crap on about how good Toyota and Nissan are.

and for the 3 minuets it takes to pop a rocker cover why didn't they do that before it was started.

Got my hands on my new single cab ranger 3l td automatic two weeks ago and so far have only run between gold coast and tweed so cant give a solid opinion yet but so far I love it. Had Minecorp fit 40litre water tank, bull bar and snorkel, 2 under tray tool boxes, breather tubes on rear diff & not needed on front as sealed unit. Picking up our Adventure tray top camper in mid september so should be able to give more detail after that trip. Fuel consumption to Brisbane and back was about manufactures claims 9l/100km.
Tow our 4.85 Trailcraft easily so we are taking it down to SA to try the hot spots the Exploroz members have put me onto.
