Any one doing the
hay River trip in July/August 2007. Are permits hard to get?

I will be in a group of nine vehicles from the Mitsubishi SA 4WD Club travelling from Alice to
Birdsville via Arltunga, Jervois, Batton
Hill,
Hay River and Poepells. We are leaving Arltunga on July 24th. We have basically followed the advice given in the Trek Notes plus advice from other club members.

For two people in one vehicle the total cost including permits and
camping for two nights at Batton
Hill plus the bush tucker tour is a bit over $300.00. You need to give a month's notice.
I don't believe that our tour leader has had any problems getting the permits, following the normal channels.

Put your application in as early as you can. They are not difficult to get, but sometimes slow. Lindsay Bookie is a great man and very interesting to talk to over the fire.

G'day pling,
Great trip, but do it south to north, you can see where the south-bounders have had a lot of trouble getting over the dunes because of the wind factor. Very steep approaches . No problems from the south.

Permits definately need to be applied for
well in advance. They are available from Jol Fleming at this link www.direct4wd.com.au/
With the permits comes the GPS waypoints which you will need for some of the trip. Jol's website provides plenty of advice on the trip and you should not consider travelling alone.
Apart from that make sure you allow a day at least at Batton
Hill for the bush tucker tour and to experience sunset at
Goyders Pillar. Also keep an eye on the weather and rain.
Jervois Station is the last refuel point and also has a web based weather monitoring system.
It is a great trip and make sure you stop over at
Lake Caroline on the way South
