Hi all,
We are buying a Nissan Pathfinder ST L auto T/D to pull a 2 tonne Lotus caravan -
after lots of research and reading comments on the various forums we think we should be using a Hayman Reese towbar and WDH instead of a Nissan towbar, but the Nissan dealer has told us that the warranty will be void on the vehicle if we do this. He has recommended we purchase a Heavy Duty Nissan Tow Pack which will tow up to 3 tonne.
Any comments and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Bollocks! Tell him he is full of it.

The manufacturer says the vehicle is capapable of towing XXXXkg, then as long as the hitch is engineered for the job then who supplies it is irrelevent.
The original R51 towbar was a crap design that they tried to patch up with bolt-on bits. I think it has been redesigned now. I'm told that Nissan did pay to have a Hayman Reece bar fitted to a vehicle when the owner had no faith in their product.

Lots of vehicles with HR hitches that have no issues with going in for warranty work.

Have you read this?

Billellen,
Simply purchasing the vehicle voids most warranties with Nissan.
I am about to spend another $500 on suspension because rear springs have sagged. It's only just a year old and has only carried half of its carring cappacity.

Bloody hell mate,,, don't say that !

Is it as much as the Dealers fault, that warranty stuff gets fixed, or is it Nissan itself ?

I'm not so sure, about the springs, but a mate of mine had his New Hilux springs knocked back under warranty, because he drives it a bit in the Vic. High Country.
Thought that was what they are for, within reason, and this guy is 45, so he is well over the yahoo stage..

I didn't even try to get my springs replaced, after the vehicles first trip up in the Desert, they had sagged.
Yes I do agree with you about the Japanese 1 Tonne Syndrome (really 1/2 tonne) we were on the bump stops all the way, with 600 kg's of of stuff.

Hope I never have to invoke my " Extended Warranty ", od have one of those " hand-grenade " engines..

Cheers Mate

Billenen,
Yeh, you're right!
Read the fine print in the warranty and it say that initiating a warranty claim will immediately and permanently void the warranty! :-)

All I can advise to you is to RTFM ,,,, ( read the fu**en manual ) and as long as you stay within those specs, Nissan has to honnor the warranty.
Then all you have to do is to force the issue, if something goes wrong ( good luck )
I hope the Van is 2 tonne loaded, or you may be in for a suprise once you load it up

It may pay to put Poly Air bags under the "pathy" and get sone tow pak stabilizers.

It will greatly enhance stability, and give the "pathy" a level ride

Just looked up the towing specs on the "Pathy",,, looks like you are well in the specs,,,
All pathy specs allow 3 tonne towing capacity breaked. I would be throwing that straight back at the dealer, and very hard..
Personally I would be letting Nissan know about it too
But do yourseld a favor,, dont run the vehicle right up on the 3000kg towing limit, give it some lee-way ( spelling )
Tell me ,,,Diesel, or V6 ??

Read the following link and you will see there are major problems using the genuine nissan towbar with a HR WDH.
A neighbour had one fitted complained to dealer and nissan replaced the genuine with the HR towbar free of cost.

i think you should go back to this dealer state the fact that if within the limit recommended by the manifacturers you can have what you want .....and buy from another dealer.

Hi Billellen;
late responding but for your info, I have same vehicle. Had Nissan hitch fitted originally but had to change to Reese due to shearing bolts on Nissan unit. Nissan refunded me fully and are now happy to give full warranty coverage with aftermarket unit fitted. If you would prefer it from the horses mouth email Nissan customer relations at crdnissan.com.au and get it in writing (webmail). Nissan does not approve the use of wdh with their towbars so Reese hitch is better unless you fancy towing large heavy van without. I certainly would not. If and when you get a Reese unit fitted you may find the hitch tongue is about 3 or 4 inches longer than it needs to be. Can be shortened and redrilled to bring towball closer to rear bumper thus improving download & stability.Only costs about $20 at any capable engineering shop. Apart from that car goes well, tows well and is reasonably economical. All the best with it. Jomah.

We have been in touch with Nissan Australia and they have confirmed that fitting a Hayman Reese tow bar to the Pathfinder will NOT void the warranty on the vehicle - which is as it should be. Thankyou for replies.
