I have just bought a 97 80 series LC GXL. The previous owner has put Manual Locking Hub on it. I would like to know if there is any advantage in having them on?? Thanks for any comments.

Kevancoll,
has the vehicle had a part time kit fitted or just manual locking hubs?
GXL is full time 4wd and if only manual hubs would only save a bit of tyre wear/less pressure on steering due to front wheels not driving when hubs unlocked,. but front diff and axles would still be working.
My 97 model does not have a centre diff lock switch ,which is necessary to activate 4wd if a part time kit is fitted. if this switch is present it might indicate the part time 4wd conversion kit which does offer reduced wear an front drive components ( front tail shaft, diff and axles dont turn when centre diff and hubs not locked) and some fuel savings.
cheers
Howard

Hi Howard.
I don't kow if it has or hasn't, but it does have a centre diff lock switch. So maybe it does have a part time kit added. How would I find out .
Thanks

You could try asking the previous owner?

Chances are if it has the hubs, it also has the part time kit....to
check, make sure the hubs are on free, and dash centre diff switch is unlocked....chock opposing wheels to be sure to be sure, and slide under the truck to turn the front tailshaft. If it turns freely, it is indeed a part time kit, if it is locked, it is still constant....
If the previous owner just put the hubs on, you would be experiencing extra vibrations from the front shaft spinning with no load....If your cruiser has ABS brakes, the front wheel drive can not be disconnected or you loose the ABS...

Hi Dozer.
Thanks for taking the trouble to reply. I have found out, it does indeed have a part time kit fitted.
I am a bit new to this game but I am learning fast.

Hi Dozer I posted a question last night about free spinning front drive shaft while stationary and out of gear and had replies. As my vehicle is newly purchased and still finding things and being a GXL I wasn't exspecting to see a hub kit installed, until I popped off the dress caps Q, if what you say about vibration from shaft spinning, would it be wise to unlock around town
60-80klm and lockin for highway touring.
Yours Thoughts would be appreciated
Thanks Chuka
